Forum Moderation

Post by JustMyself » Thu, 14 Jun 2012 5:06 pm

After a year of forum stalking I finally decided to dive in and join the board. I set up my profile and created my signature block. I chose two, tame quotes for my signature block (one quote was Plato, for goodness sake...) and one of the moderator's just deleted it with a message that signatures must be only one line in length.

The signature block creation section only states that is has to be less than 300 characters. Nothing about it being limited to one line. Most of the regular's signature blocks take up a lot more space than mine did. One of them is even the inspiring view of an emoticon picking its nose, which is not distracting to the flow of the message threads at all (sarcasm in case you missed it).

It's fine if we are only allowed one signature line. Just please state it clearly on the profile creation page. Having my little attempt at positive energy just erased like that does not make me feel welcome on the forum at all. If I was in violation of board policy, I would have preferred that I be messaged about it so that I could change it myself rather than losing my quotes. I can understand the preemptive deletion if I had inserted offensive material of some sort, but it was just "too long." Heck, I was even online when the deletion was done, so my response would have been quick if I was asked to fix it. There needs to be a difference in moderating offensive or illegal material versus small technical violations where no one is being harmed.

All in all the information on this board is helpful and amusing. I appreciate that the moderators all work on the board on their free time and are free to exercise their discretion when monitoring threads and accounts. I will probably keep haunting the board, though I'm not sure how much I will be posting going forward. I obviously need to develop a thicker skin if I'm going to hang around here on a regular basis. I just needed to vent because the abruptness of the "editing" shocked me. Thanks.
I lurk, therefore I am...

Yes, an informative link. It is also 5 years old. Anyway, I'm aware of the policy now and will stay in compliance.
