Is it possible to get a job while outside of Singapore

Post by aymh » Wed, 06 Jun 2012 2:27 pm

Hi all,

I would like to know what is the probability of getting a job in Singapore while one is outside: am living [working] in Malaysia [and am NOT Malaysian], having 2+ years xp (IT) with Master degree. I've been looking/applying for 4 months now (but never got any reply  though I found dozens of jobs where I fit the requirements :o )

I know that 4 months is a short time, but I want to know did it work with anyone before here, or am just wasting my time [should look somewhere else... middle east perhaps :? ]

Thanks for any comments

1. If you applied for jobs listed saying "Only locals/PRs need to apply", you are wasting your time - this comment is there for a reason!
2. No Singapore employer is willing to pay for a trip to an interview, and most not even for a long-distance phone call. You can maximize your chances by having a local phone number (pre-paid card, works in Malaysia as well, on roaming!) and suggesting time windows where you will be in Singapore (on your own cost) for an interview.
3. You need a good reason (and convince the employer of it) why you as a foreigner should be hired and not a similarly skilled local. A shortage of similarly skilled locals is best, but lower salary expectations might also work.

When I was trying to move to sg in 2007 I applied and interviewed from the uk. But most local agencies ignored me and the two interviews I got in 5 months were for MNC when I applied directly on their websites. I am in IT too so yes it's possible but quite frustrating.

BoroBoy, that was also before the 2011 GE. Now it's doubtful whether you would have gotten in even with your qualifications had they been the same Since May 2011.

Criteria has been tightened up considerably. Guys with masters don't mean anything, unless they are masters from "well-known" western universities.

I won't say it's impossible, but you only have about a 20% chance of what you had in 2007 unless you are able to obtain a PEP pass before arriving here.
