They ask you when you land (it's on the landing card) and if they suspect you they will check.

Don't underestimate the Singapore government, the ICA are very hot on this kind of thing and if you are seen to be abusing the situation, then forget coming back.

Just a warning mate, come on, wherever you live, would you want foreigners doing the same?

Tom, everybody wants to come to Singapore for a multitude of reasons, least of which is their famed efficiency in a lot of things. The government leads the way in this. Now all the major databases are innerconnected between the various government ministries. e.g., Inland Revenue and the Medical records/Birth/Death and military records are all connected with the Ministry of Manpower and ICA (Immigrations). They'll catch you coming or going. Oh, and they are pretty good all things considered.

That's great and I'm really happy it works that way!

I'm just mind boggled the fact that it matters where I would be staying when I stay in the country legally.

If I would have a Singaporean girlfriend and I would stay there for a couple of 3 months periods, I have no idea why anyone would care if I stay with her as I would be a visitor. I have never heard that this would be the case anywhere in the world, not in the US or Northern Europe where the immigration laws are very strict and very well controlled.

But thanks for letting me know, I'd rather sit on an un-caned bottom ;)

Locking this thread before it gets obliterated. Just received a PM requesting for this thread to be deleted.

@OP: we don't work that way here. We keep things documented so people would learn.

What the OP cannot seem to fathom is that in THIS country the Gahmen Micromanage and Macromanage EVERYTHING. Why? Because the little red dot is over-crowded already.

Good call Nak.
