Duty Free Alcohol when Transit Through MY?

Post by carteki » Tue, 29 May 2012 6:40 pm

Interesting question ... I'm sitting in KLIA at the tail end of a 24 hour journey waiting for the final stretch home. To pass the time I thought I'd stock up on my alcohol supplies only to have the individuals at the shop say I can't buy any (and drinking some now would be good too!). Now I haven't been outside KLIA - not even through border control and I have the boarding passes from the previous 2 flights.
Does transiting through KL mean that I'm coming to Singapore from Malaysia for customs purposes or from my original destination?

Actually, they are not correct. You can buy alcohol, even if originating in KL. It's just that you are not entitled to any duty free allowance. They told me the same thing... I said that I was going to pay the duty... they said OK... nuff said.

Secondarily, I believe you are correct... you are in transit from another country... it wouldn't matter anyway.

Third, if you came from another country via KL, you should be able to purchase your duty free in Singapore if you can show your first tickets.

I don't actually know the third one to be true, because unless a KL flight is the only one on the baggage belts, they never ask to see your ticket, only ask for a flight number.

Thanks SE. I am aware that I can buy the items and pay duty. The point is not to since I technically haven't been to MY!

I would buy it in Singapore, but unfortunately they don't stock my brand of gin at the duty free shop :( which makes it slightly more difficult. Fortunately I haven't quite finished my bottle at home - so it'll have to wait for the next trip.

I checked at T3 - rarely go there - and they do now :) But I decided to purchase it in MY and then put it in my handluggage before getting off the plane. That way unless they stopped me at customs they'd never know (and as far as I'm concerned I'm not coming from Malaysia so not doing anything wrong) - which they didn't.
