double stroller and public transportation

Post by mama2nng » Thu, 24 May 2012 2:41 am

Hello,

I will be moving with family to Singapore in a few months and will be using public transportation to get around. I'm thinking of getting a double stroller (baby jogger city mini double) for my two kids to make our travels within Singapore easier. Not sure if it'll fit on the buses, though. My kids are 5 and 20 months. My 5 year old can't last walking long distances and ends up sitting in the stroller when we go out now and I end up carrying the 20 month old around. Will the double stroller fit on public transportation? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In order to take your stroller of any size on the bus, you'll have to fold it up and carry it. Bus travel with two small children and one adult is pretty much unheard of, unless you want to get into baby wearing with the smaller one.

They have these wheeled platforms that snap onto the back of prams, the older sprog can stand on it when he gets a bit tired.

Double wide stroller and public transport is a bit like square peg, round hole. I have managed to get my single Maclaren on a bus without having to fold it but I did have to carry it on so it makes it a lot easier if you do fold it.

Even if you got a tandem stroller like a Phil & Teds or City Select you would still have to fold to get on a bus. For Tandem or double wide, you should be able to fit these onto an MRT train but you will struggle a bit with the escalators and lifts.

A taxi would probably be your best bet if travelling with both children, or like the other poster said, put a buggy board on the back of your single stroller for your 5 year old to stand on.

Thanks for your replies. The baby carrier is an option. With regards to the buggy boards, are there any universal ones that will fit any simgle stroller?

LOL, I think you can get them from Mother's Work. They have stores in Tangln Mall, Great World City and Marina Bay Sands although the first 2 are better stores.

The big double strollers also won't fit through most doors here, or down the aisles in shops.

I shudder at thought of trying to get one of those on a bus.

If you are going to go on a bus, you're also going to want a stroller that folds up quickly, easily, and is light to carry as the bus driver will make you get the kids out of the stroller and fold it while you're trying to get on the bus and get them settled. And the driver will not wait for you to get settled while you kick people out of the priority seating and get your little ones in etc. - he'll be speeding off again whilst you're trying to balance yourself, your bags, two children, and a stroller. Just warning you.
