Sony did very well in the past, as far as I remember. Apple performed badly during those same times ...

Brands or products that never performed well aren't known to most people (exactly because they never did well). You probably never heard of Bosch handphones, even though you may know the Bosch brand (from car parts and power tools). In the case of Mannesmann handphones, you probably know neither brand nor product (although the company pioneered the GSM standard that almost all handphones use now). Same with ZTE handphones, I suppose - but ZTE is currently the world's fifth biggest handphone maker and performs well by almost any yardstick ...

So, what exactly are you looking for?
