I stopped reading because it got awkward when the author fruitlessly and probably frustratedly trying to make sense of the stupid execution of a policy.taxico wrote:apparently non-chinese eligible flats have lower COVs:

and since, only the first part of a double-barreled race (chinese-indian = chinese) will be taken into consideration by HDB when it comes to your quota...
thus this classification means having the right order MIGHT help your child get a flat more easily. or could it...??
beppi is right - you can pick and choose whichever person's race as the main applicant (for better chances of getting a flat). but when it's time to sell, it could be a pain... (isn't it always about buying and selling for singaporeans?)
...so you have to go through some extra hurdles to re-classify your ethnic group... in order to be able to buy/sell the flat to the chinese.
this re-classification is at HDB's discretion. and you know what that means. it might have to do with whether or not the quota's "filled"...??
say WHAAAT? my wife and i have never got a flat at a place we wanted.
You sound confused to me. That Indians are Caucasians will probably confuse you further I expect.offshoreoildude wrote:IF asked for my race (i.e. for a new NRIC) I always ask for 'white'. When they confusingly respond it's not available I ask for 'Ang Moh', when that doesn't turn up I ask for 'Matt Salleh', when that doesn't turn up they offer 'Caucasian' but I explain that I am certain my line does not come from the Caucus region of Russia.
So... since this is highly confusing to you... mark BLACK... after all we all have ancestors in Africa.offshoreoildude wrote:IF asked for my race (i.e. for a new NRIC) I always ask for 'white'. So, when someone hassles me, I can't use the line "Oh, I get it; it's because I'm black, isn't it?!"Strong Eagle wrote:Well... shit... OK... YELLOWJR8 wrote:'... The confusion is on you then. Funny enough, some words can have more than one meaning!offshoreoildude wrote:IF asked for my race (i.e. for a new NRIC) I always ask for 'white'. I don't find it "often offensive" though... I guess I've been here too long.Caucasian |kôˈkāZHən|
adjective
1 often offensive of or relating to one of the traditional divisions of humankind, covering a broad group of peoples from Europe, western Asia, and parts of India and North Africa.
[so named because the German physiologist Blumenbach believed that it originated in the Caucasus region of southeastern Europe.]
• white-skinned; of European origin.
2 of or relating to the Caucasus.
3 of or relating to a group of languages spoken in the region of the Caucasus, of which thirty-eight are known, many not committed to writing. The most widely spoken is Georgian, of the small South Caucasian family, not related to the three North Caucasian families.
noun
often offensive a Caucasian person.
• a white person; a person of European origin.
usage: In the racial classification as developed by anthropologists in the 19th century, Caucasian (or Caucasoid) included peoples whose skin color ranged from light (in northern Europe) to dark (in parts of North Africa and India). Although the classification is outdated and the categories are now not generally accepted as scientific (see usage at Australoid and Mongoloid), the term Caucasian has acquired a more restricted meaning. It is now used as a synonym for ‘white or of European origin,’ as in the following citation: the police are looking for a Caucasian male in his forties.
Really? I thought "Ang Moh" means "yellow hair". Or does it mean something else?sundaymorningstaple wrote:Not nearly as offensive as Ang Moh!Actually, I rather like the term as it's mostly used affectionately rather than as a derogatory term (although that has been changing here in the past 2 years as the citizenry gets progressively more and more xenophobic).
