Any advice what my wife can do?

Postby mrgin » Thu, 26 Apr 2012 9:14 am

Hello all,

First thank you for sharing all your experience here. We have a wedding soon and she will join me in Singapore soon. I'm an expat and she will be under Dependent Pass.

Do you know what she can do when she arrives here? I think a job will be hard at the moment, school is also an option. But I want to reach out to you guys to see anything other options we have to enjoy life in Singapore.

Thanks

Do a search of the board for Volunteer / Charity work, or some similar. There have been a number discussions on that here. One government link for that can be found on my links page below -

Here it is: National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre

or you could become a Museum Docent: http://www.fom.sg/activity_docent.html

There are also a wide variety of arts organisations and events that need intelligent and capable volunteers (which would also give your wife a chance to meet some of the more interesting and vocal members of Singapore society). These include:

(1) The Singapore Biennale (http://www.singaporeartmuseum.sg/sb2013) - I only ever did one (in 2006), but I enjoyed it tremendously!

(2) Singapore Writers Festival (http://www.singaporewritersfestival.com) - One of my faves. Got to follow Pico Iyer and Victoria Glendinning around this year! :D

(3) Singapore Arts Festival (http://www.nac.gov.sg/events/singapore-arts-festival) - Unfortunately, it's currently on hold, being under review. But it's also highly enjoyable.

(4) The Substation (http://www.substation.org/support-us) - They do great work and always need extra hands along the way.

(5) The Arts House (http://www.theartshouse.com.sg/Support/Volunteer.aspx) - Another great arts space that keeps local arts (and artists) alive and kicking!
