That's part of the overall problem - they are spineless and always whinging about something and trying to blame everyone else for the insignificant problems in their sheltered little world.

Challenge them on what they are driving at i.e. really drill down and ask them what their problem is and they'll get defensive and either throw some 'just because you're white blah, blah' passive aggressive racism at you, or just shit themselves, shut-up and scuttle off back under their rocks.

I agree with the blogger not the whiner because the restaurant handled the complaint poorly and that is the reason why it escalated and the media is fanning the flames by posting these kinds of articles.

On the whole foreigners vs. locals issue, it is getting close to xenophobia IMHO. My usual response to these kinds of comments is just build a wall around the country and forget about importing any kind of products. Be a hermit country.

Yes; see how well Korea is doing---

i mean all channels. online, print, tv...the media is not responsible in putting out their material. Just read all the local issues on yahoo singapore and you will see how the media is really riding on this issue. Notice how they phrase their titles.

The thing is, you never know the full story in a situation like this - such as:

When the Singaporean guy showed up, was he shown to the last of the tables for two?

When the Western guy showed up, was the table for 3 the last table available or the smallest table available? (the owner of the place said himself that the restaurant is always busy at weekend).

When the Western guy showed up did he ask for a table for 3 because someone else was joining them?

We'll never know..............

I have something to say about this, but it's more generic and should probably have its own thread.

As far as this one is concerned, Wild Honey already has an anti-local reputation among locals, there are a few HGW postings to attest to this.

I've been to both restaurants, neither really warrant a return. Unnecessarily expensive ordinary food in a tense environment. They do have some good dishes at Mandarin though, just not worth the inevitable wait.

Hard to put a finger on it, but both restaurants have a tense vibe, I think it's mostly from the staff who seat customers. Plus the Mandarin one is too small and has an arcane ordering system.

Hmmmm, I agree with one of the comments on the article, this Gary Tan guy sounds like a typical spoilt brat. Also, it's as Billy says, it's typical passive aggressive reaction you expect in Singapore, these particular breed of locals (not all locals) are spineless good for nothing's they complain about stuff without actually facing the problem off when it's an issue, this is totally destructive to the situation and never helps a thing!

I wish there was a picture of him so other restaurants could be warned of his presence.

The government, oops I mean the major daily paper, has started running a series on how much foreigners add to SP. Interesting, wondering how they're going to manage that at the same time they try to reduce the number of EPs granted etc. It's schizo....

Schizo is one way to put it, I see it as plain shooting themselves in the foot.

Like with the schooling thing I mentioned in this or another thread, where everyone was up in arms about giving locals first crack at admissions, which is not totally hard to understand. But who loses?

From where I'm sitting I see heated responses without considering the ramifications. Win the battle, lose the war. And it's not even a battle or a war, things are not even necessarily opposing. But fight like it is and it becomes a war, and the victory Pyrrhic.

So ok, the foreign kids get the crumbs of choice for schools. Now those kids can only go to lesser schools, thanks the the ridonculous system here that rewards robotic rote learners. The vast majority of foreign parents of those kids, whose companies do not pay for schooling, can not afford International School, so they are left with what choice? The answer is - Hong Kong. Among other answers.

So who loses? Singapore as a country from less people wanting to come here, Singaporean school kids from a more international community and for some their only real-life chance to interact with it, and the companies who set up shop here who won't continue to be able to attract and / or retain foreign workers.

On the latter point, I know of some people for whom that became a deal breaker, and is why they're planning to leave.

The foreigners are forced into a battle they never wanted and the locals win them out of their schools, the foreigners don't really lose anything that they can't get back home, in Hong Kong, or elsewhere.

I guess the only thing the foreigners loose is the chance to have their kids go to school with Singaporeans, which, sorry to say, somehow is not really losing anything?
