Unfortunately in the chase for GDP the government seems fixated on getting people in to do a job....... rather than simply getting people to do a BETTER job!
Efficiency and productivity have to have a higher place in importance than the number of lower cost workers that simply throws people at the problem.
An example......it has taken me 4-weeks to get the intercom in my apartment fixed for one reason or another;
1) I reported the problem on a Thursday when i was getting a new label for our carpark. Doing two things at once (albeit one after the other) seemed to confuse management as our unit didn't make it to the master list.
This meant the engineer didn't come at all the following Wednesday (only come one day per week.) I got our unit placed on the list that day but we had to wait another week for the engineer to come back.
2) Engineer came, said 'You need a new board, I'll bring one 9am next week.' Make sure it is 9am, we said since we will drive to KL at lunchtime.
Called managment at 9:30am asking where the engineer was....'Sorry they only come in the afternoon.' Then no news and nobody arrived before we headed north.
3) They came today, after lunch and the engineer (a different one) asked, 'What's wrong?' GA! Didn't your guy tell you anything? We need a new board. By shear and utter luck there was a unit in the guy's van so it was replaced in 5-min.
A 5-min job basically takes a month and even then fixed more by luck than judgement. PRODUCTIVITY! Such a waste of these guy's time, my time, management's time, my family's time in waiting for these muppets to even arrive. When people are cheap, there is no such saying as 'Time is Money' and this needs to change.
With that, Singapore can operate efficiently with JR8's mentioned 3m population.
