Stay in SG when waiting for my working permit, legal?

Post by skywalker86 » Wed, 11 Apr 2012 2:07 pm

Hi, Good evening all brothers!!!I just came to Singapore recently and I face a problem when I rent a house with my friend. The landlord need my working permit but I just get my job and still waiting for the approval for the working permit (my friend already get the EP). The landlord said they cannot allow a person without permit to stay and that is illegal. Currently, I just stay at Singapore and wait for the approval without work. Under this condition, is that legal for the landlord to allow me to stay in his HDB appartment?

You can stay with your friend as his guest as long as you have a valid short term visit pass but you can not rent or co-rent any property unless you have a work or other long term stay permit.

Hi, x9200.
My company already help me to apply for the Employment Pass Online Application and now I need to wait for my medical report 1st before I make an appointment with MOM for finger print and further process.
Do you have any suggestion if I did the mistake and already co rent with my friend?

Try to have your friend to talk to the landlord regarding your situation. If necessary, you can even show him the IPA as proof that you are legally here in Singapore. Once you already have your finger-printing and photo submission done, you are considered legal to rent a place, even though you may not have the photocard yet.

Your photocard processing will not take too long (probably within one week if your medical results are processed fast enough).

Try this way then, consider your friend as the sole tenant at this point of time. You stay at your friend's room as a guest (as suggested by x9200) under social visit pass, which is legal. Whatever rent your friend has to pay before you get your photocard, you pay your portion as if you're staying. Both of you and the landlord probably have to endure this arrangement for only a week or two until you get your photocard ready.

Once it is ready, then you can change your status as a co-tenant with your friend.

This should work.
When I first came, I actually put up like that until I get my photocard ready and I continued on staying.

In case you need reference.

The worst case was I had already sign for the contract with the landlord through agent. My friend and I already as a co-tenant on that contract and the term and conditions got mentioned that we are not allow to bring guest to come in. @@
Now, only can hope that I can get my photocard as soon as possible because the landlord (old people) keep asking for the photocopy of my permit.
Anyway, I really appreciate for your help and brother x9200...
Thanks for you guys ^^
Wish you guys all the best!
