The corporate world here seems insane. The husband is in calls with people who live in Singapore at 1am! This seems to be a normal almost everyday experience. Strange! We are still getting used to this 60+ hour work week - sigh it is just Tuesday!
I think the only country worse off is Japan. Korea and the US, probably but no personal experience.

And the Chinese Singaporeans* call the Australians lazy for wanting to leave work by five!

* never heard something similar from the Malay and Indian Singaporeans.
US? We moved from the US and never worked all these crazy hours I do here.

Must be industry-specific then.

My kids are in secondary and leave the house about 7.30am - get the public bus and they're home again by around 4.30pm unless they go off shopping or something.

They're supposed to take at least one after school club and many do but it tapers off towards the end of the school year - unless it's a really good club, interest wanes.

Often they don't have any homework either - I'm quite happy about this - they seem to be doing OK in school.

As far as I'm concerned, it's gearing you up for later life - if you do a good job and get the work done, there's no need to be farting around until 9-10pm at work (or school!).

If what Nakatago says is true and the Chinese Singaporeans think that Aussies are lazy, perhaps they should look closer at how it's done. Australia seems to run well enough and people there don't hang about at work until all hours........they go home and have a bit of quality time with the family and/or friends........AND you don't see them all nodding off on the bus on the way to and from work every day............

hmmmm - funny coincidence there!

8-)
