Which grade to send to?

Post by Melanie Nov » Sun, 25 Mar 2012 3:17 pm

:?
So I am hoping to move to Singapore in July and will probably send my kids to the Overseas Family School.
They are presently in grade 2, grade 4 and grade 10.
The Sing school term starts in August and they will just have turned 8, 10 and 16 respectively.
Because they will have done half the year in SA with 2 of the 4 terms, do I send them to the next grade or repeat the grade? How does the SA standard compare?
I don't want them to be too old for their grade but I also don't want them to struggle.
help!

I can't comment on the SA standards, but I think it is worthwhile to consider how they would be placed when and if you return. If you advance them, there will probably be no problem with them returning to whatever grade they would have been in had you stayed put. If you hold them back, they may be put in the grade below when you return, which may affect their self esteem. Alternatively, you could consider a school like the Australian school that would stay on the same calendar year.

Also it depends on how they are currently doing. If they are advanced learners, it is easier to move them forward, if they are not, they may benefit from going back and gain more academic self confidence.

Have OFS got places? I heard that there was quite a long waiting list for some grades.
