Couldn't find a good job so I took a 2000 SGD/month job

Post by youngprofessional2012 » Thu, 15 Mar 2012 4:44 pm

I just graduated from UC-Santa Barbara w a BS in Business Admin. (focus in Management) 3.4 GPA in DEC 2011. I came to Singapore bc my fiance is from Thailand and we are still waiting for the visa paperwork to be processed so she can come to the US. Anyways, after a month of fruitless job hunting... I decided to apply for a managerial position at Mcdonald's. Well, I got offered assitant manager position for the pultry salary of $2000 SGD/month. I am supposed to work 44 hours per week but generally end up actually working 55 hours. I'm renting a room for $1500/ month and after travel and food ...I usually dip into $500 of my savings. Should I just quit and continue my job hunt? Everybody that lives in the flat is about the same age as me but generally making well over $3000 SGD per month. I'm Caucasian and speak Spanish and English fluently and know basic Mandarin.

SGD2000/month and a SGD1500/month rental on room?

Do you know that you can rent a room for merely SGD500 per month ?(considering that you seriously need to manage your finances)

Hmm, you do not have much years of experience in related field. And you studied business admin (pretty much what locals here have also so the competition is there). I'd say job hunt but I can only say all the best to you.

I'm on vacation in VN (didn't know that was public). Well aside from my degree, I do not possess any real other qualifications and/or experience. All of my roommates were hired outside of Singapore which is why they got much higher paying entry-level positions. I'm renting this room because when i first entered SIngapore, I entered on 90-day tourist visa and I could only rent a condo room (not HBD). I have 4-months left on the lease and will move out right after...but i'm stuck until then :(....Any advice would be much appreciated, honestly I think a salary of $3500 would be fair given my credentials

I suspect you are suffering a case of 'My friends earn $x, therefore I am worth the same'.

Otherwise how do you justify that statement? Are your friends flipping burgers too?

Sundry, such a great word, and one that really deserves to be used more often. Conjures up images of a Sunday afternoon cricket match on the village green. 8-)

No, i am justifying it because if I were in the US, given my current qualifications and lack of experience, i could easily be expecting an entry-level managerial salary of $35-$55k USD depending on location and industry. I took a job at Mcdonald's bc some job is better than no job, but I'm certainly not try to make a career out of it. My other idea is to open some sort of small business, however, the paperwork and arduous approval process may not be worth it? Any positive suggestions?

+1 to that. For that kind of job, the salary would be pretty much fixed, regardless of the person's 'credentials'. The only thing to do is keep looking for another position where your knowledge, experience, etc. would be better rewarded.

I'm surprised you managed to get a job in SG at all. Are you on a WP?

4 years, $75,000 USD in debt, and 10,000 km away from home all to get a job "flipping burgers".... oh life.
