Is Singapore a bicycle-friendly city?

Post by Kendo » Wed, 14 Mar 2012 2:46 am

Planning to move with my family from the US in the summer and wondering whether to ship our bicycles. Is cycling in Singapore common, or is it dangerous? We have no idea where we'll be living yet, so this is more of a general question . . . so I guess I should apologize for being so general!

Hi Kendo,

As with most cities, it can get a little hectic during the peak hours. So cycling on the major streets during those times is probably not advisable.

However, safety and awareness for cyclists have definitely risen during the past few years or so. Just make sure you're equipped with safety gear (helmet, lights, etc.)

Hi Kendo,

There have been a number of threads on this subject (you can use the search function above and to the right of here, underneath the 'Profile' button, to find them), including this one:

Do a google search on "Singapore park connector network" I moved here from the US recently and brought my bike...I'm a casual rider In short, I've found cycling around the center of Singapore not great (drivers are dangerous and no real place for bikes) but the network mentioned above are all routes in various places around the island that are made for cycling and I've been checking them out...some really nice areas and some great places to bike with your family. In short, I'd say bring the bikes but one warning...if you live in the center then either you need to ride to the dedicated biking areas or have a way to transport your bikes to them. If you will have a car then no problem. Storage space can be an issue...if you decide not to bring them you can easily rent them at some of the network parks but not sure of the quality...I haven't tried it.
