Who's that? Stamford Raffles? :o

Nak: I don't understand how you search by image (I tried to search by image URL, it failed). Can you elaborate?

When you go to Google images, click the camera icon in the search box. It will then ask you to give the URL of an image or upload an image. In a web or camera-equipped device, I think the option to take a photo is also available.

Oh, oh, me, me! Let me try teaching what I just learned from Nak!

Using Google Search. Put in the URL and choose 'search by image' option. And the exact page will pop up in the search result.

Correct, sensei?

Ok thanks, I open Google as usual, click Images, paste in the URL (I hesitate to be more specific as it is a link to the Daily Birdcage Liner), and then click Search. And it says no matches...

Thanks very much for that, couldn't be much clearer.

But I am surprised to see that I don't get the camera icon in the search terms field.

Usually I use Google.co.uk, because Google.com defaults to Google.de and everything on screen is then in German. But more importantly neither of them have the camera icon.

So for what ever reason this search method is not going to be an option for me for the time being.

Thx again for trying though!

I went directly to https://images.google.com for that one. There is also something called "Tineye" that performs a similar function. You feed it a photo, and it tries to find the same photo anywhere else it can.

What's your browser?

From Google's support pages,
Google uses computer vision techniques to match your image to other images in the Google Images index and additional image collections. From those matches, we try to generate an accurate "best guess" text description of your image, as well as find other images that have the same content as your search image. Your search results page can show results for that text description as well as related images.

Compatible browsers

Search by Image is compatible with the following browsers:

Chrome
Firefox 3.0+
Internet Explorer 8+
Safari 5.0+

Looks like an older firefox; search box, no "omnibar", and a star icon in the address bar on the right. the navigation buttons on the left look different though. But it can't be older than 3.0...

Are you using some modified browser based off firefox? or an add-on that changes your browser agent string?

I doubt it. My browser's set to encrypt things whenever it can, including image search.

I suspect it's his browser or an extension he's using with it. It looks *really close* to Firefox, but not quite.

I even took HIS screen shot, cropped to just the tool bar, and tried to use google image search to figure out what it was :D No dice though...

:)

My day to day browser is Opera, which I find great for just about everything, and it seems they're ahead of FF in useful developments (things like the 'speed-dial' (or what ever it is called) front page).

However many financial sites come with added layers of security and only function correctly on IE or FF, so all such sites I use are now configured into the front page speed-dial of FF (v10.0.2).

The long and short of it is I checked Google via FF, and indeed the search by Image function is there. So thanks all, we got that resolved, and I know where to find it in future! :)

Try this in Opera:

Do the "Identify as Firefox" for your version.
