rent a container

Post by Steven_123 » Fri, 10 Feb 2012 11:08 am

I need to relocate back to Europe in March. For that I requested some quotes from moving companies. Roughly this will be between 9000-10000 S$.
Unfortunately I have to pay myself for the move, so I was wondering if somebody has experience with a DIY move to reduce the cost.
Renting a container, fill it, ship it, etc.
Any help is appreciated.

You don't rent a container .. the shipper / shipping company leases it .. from a Leasing Union :)

Ok, to help you, you should start off with shipping lines, who can advice and assist you.

Self filling a container is NOT an easy thing and for a 20 footer, well, where will you park it if you are going to fill it yourself ? hence the consolidators / Freight Forwarders .. still being in business ..

Where in Europe is your destination ?

Shipping a 20-footer to Europe currently costs S$1600-2000.
This is pure sea freight, so add another S$500-1000 for customs and paperwork (at least in Singapore only approved agents handle this, and I am sure in the EU it's so complicated that nobody else can).
Depending on where you go in Europe, i.e. how far from the next seaport, land transport can add considerably, even double the cost mentioned above.
Oh, and besides packing/unpacking work (and packaging material costs/disposal) you'd have no insurance, as no insurer in his right mind would cover you.
I just sent a 20-footer to Southern Germany for under S$8000 (full service both ends, incl. insurance), which I consider reasonable given the alternatives above.
