Medical Loan

Post by bentobox » Fri, 03 Feb 2012 3:25 pm

Hi there!

We are Indian expats, we recently moved here. We need to get a deep brain stimulation procedure done for my father-in-law who is a Parkinson's disease patient, and also an Indian national like us. We have to take a loan of S$50000 for this. I want to know if any of you expats have had to take a medical loan in Singapore. If yes, could you give me a recommendation?

Thanks a ton!

Please check your math:
You have half of the 80k (or even more than half, at 50k) and your brother too. Two times half is full. You don't need a loan any more!

I think he means he would have to put up 50K, not that he actually has it. Maybe he has a 5/8s share of the will?

The doctor at SGH has quoted S$80k++, and we would be putting in half the money (the other half will be contributed by my brother-in-law) - so roughly $50000. I want to know if any of you expats have had to take a medical loan in Singapore. If yes, could you give me a recommendation?

You should do more research on it, I wouldn't like you to waste your money! My mother also had the disease quite bad and couldn't stop the head shaking, to let doctors play around with brain cells at your expense in Singapore especially, makes me wonder how you can trust them after all with a population of 4.8 million were does the experience come from? If anything I would be having it done were doctors have in depth experience with a track record. Probably much better off having it done in India.

That ought to be your first priority

Well, I saw this late, and I do agree with you ..

Like the case of a person I know, who got tape worm in his brain, the doctors in Chandigarh had been like "oh, we know the symptoms, quickly do a scan for tapeworm" and went on to quickly do a biopsy to confirm .. said person, when in Singapore was getting some treatment, and he said "well, here doctors take a while to diagnose, in the time that doctors 'there' have resolved it'

as you say, experience counts I guess .. :)

Oh boy. Now I've read that, I'm going to be having nightmares about having a tapeworm in my brain for the next few days :(
Be careful what you wish for

Oh .. no worries .. Quickly get your brain scanned .. or do the Men In Black Flash-erase ..

BTW, it was supposedly due to contaminated meat, and mutton, of all meat .. which was the suspected source

I asked for myself, and turns out that the doctors couldn't locate my brain !!! on the bright side, I will NOT HAVE ANY TAPE WORM IN MY BRAIN .. cos no brain for the worm to invade .. .. and see .. brainless does have it's advantages .. haha

I am not sure if there is such thing as a medical loan. How about a standard bank loan like an overdraft or personal loan?

We figured that was our only option... but we have been already rejected for 2 of the 4 personal loans we applied to, since we are foreigners and have no credit history in Singapore. Fingers crossed, hope something works out!

personal loans - unsecured loans, are not given out for foreigners. After all, you have no surety and being foreigners, you can pack up and disappear ..

That's the banks risk .. and hence their being in their safety net -though some banks provide low level loans / credit cards .. as per MAS law, it is in the Grey area ..

For banks, if you are a PR / Citizen, atleast they can legally enforce actions ..

You will have a better chance of securing loans back in India .. compared to virtually NIL in Singapore
