Foreign Domestic Helper -Training Needs

Post by Jang1303 » Wed, 01 Feb 2012 4:14 pm

With the many discussion that we have seen on our Foreign Domestic Helper, surprisingly one of the topic I hv not come across is no one has question if the social issue we are experiencing today could largely due to the lack of proper integration, training and resources for our foreign domestic worker.

Being an employer myself, while we were told that our FDW will go through some form of training in their home country, these training center as I hv witnessed myself are both too generalized and ill prepared the FDW. I certainly do not have much faith in the training by the maid agency when one just have to see the so call training area is less than half the size of our store room and at any given one time 30 or more maids looking at one demonstrator. And certainly does not help when one expects the FDW to be up & running the monent they joined the household.

Thus I would like to seek the public opinion based on your experiences how we can help our FDW

1. Do you think the training that the FDW received in their home country or maid agency in Singapore adequately prepared them to handle their job?
2. What are the most critical area for you when you hire a maid -
A) Housework
B) Child care
c) Elderly Care
D) Cooking
E) Others
3. Which area could you like your FDW to receive training on ?
A) General training on better communication skills, personal hygience + home safety etc
b) Planning Housework and Cleaning techniques
C) Taking care of the children
D) Elderly care
E) Cooking
F) Pet Care
G) Others..................
4) Will you be willing to pay if such a training facility is available in Singapore - Yes or NO

I truly believe this could be an area to help us better integrate our FDW especially for working women like myself, and not to mention it is in my wish list that a facility as such is available today other than those inadequate training run by the maid agencies.

To me, it would appear that you are in the planning stages of setting up a commercial enterprise, e.g., your comment re: would you be willing to pay.....

As such, being commercial in nature, further discussion of this topic could see your account being locked.

You were doing okay until your last item.....

None of the above I would say Honesty and the willingness to learn would be the critcal areas I would be looking for.

Not really because I have the feeling the place would be run like some sort of sweat shop and the helpers treated like cattle.
