Some questions about NS from U.S. greencard holder

Post by wetoh » Fri, 16 Dec 2011 1:54 pm

Hi,
I am currently a 16 year old student in U.S. I have been doing all of the necessary exit permit renewals and bonds do I am ok in that regard. However I do have a few questions:
I will complete my high school education in June 2013. I will apply for university in U.S. and try to get 2 year deferment.
1. How do I make sure I will be able to make the 2015 university school year? Is there a way to make sure my enlistment date is in July/August/September?
2. When should I register for NS? Do I have to be in Singapore to do this?
3. When will they inform me of my enlistment date? Can I choose/suggest my own?
4. When do I have to go for medical checkup and fitness test? Before or after NS registration?
5. If I do well on fitness test and my enlistment date is September 2013, when will I actually complete my NS?
6. Can I take my 14 days of leave each year all at once to visit U.S.?

Of course I am Singapore citizen, born in Singapore. I moved to U.S. for father's occupation when I was five years old.

When is your birthday?

If you can enlist in Sep 2013 then yes, you'll have no problem going for your university study in 2015. But are you 18 by Sep 2013?

You need to re read his questions again if you wish to advice him.

i'm pretty sure you can get 2 years deferment to complete high school so long as your paperwork has and will be in order. but to get 2 years deferment (2 years of university) after you complete high school is a little bit trickier.

there are BMT intakes in the second half of the year, but i'm unsure if you can suggest/request for a specific date (such as september 13th) as there are fixed intakes for BMT every year to conincide with intakes at "command schools" (as they are now called).

the different BMTC intakes will also translate to the type of friends/platoon mates you'll make. if you don't fall into a cycle which coincides with these intakes, it is likely that you will not enter command school. usually enlistees with lower education would be herded into such said intakes.

BMT that starts in jan/feb usually has a lot of "A" level graduates. the second half of the year sees more polytechnic graduates. more space at officer cadet school is reserved for "A" level grads than polytechnic grads.

registering for NS and enlistment dates/procedures can be obtain through ns.sg or through CMPB. i believe you can register for NS from overseas.

all your medical check-ups and fitness tests (for 2 month NSF duration reduction) must be completed before your enrolment - i recommend you come back as soon as you finish high school and inform CMPB you want to enlist asap for education reasons.

the medical check-up can be arranged as short as a month before enlistment but i'm unsure about the fitness (NAFA) test as you would have to take it at assigned times/dates - singaporean students do it in school as part of phys ed.

you will officially complete NS 2 years from the date you enlist. you can shave 2 months off if you get gold/silver for your NAFA test.

taking a chunk of leave all at once to go overseas for such a period is plausible but unlikely unless your superior allows it.

good luck!

@Taxico : thank you but I was waiting for KB to provide that

My thoughts : timing as it all relates to timing as the intakes are sometimes too close for comfort that you may not have time to jump on the airplane and join the NS intakes.

As Taxico as mentioned the NS batches differs from different cohort of school leavers, you may not be able to join this intakes unless you have done your medical and registered for NS. I would suggest you go backwards and count the dates. There are cases whereby those NS registered have to wait for 6 months to join the NS intakes.

Another thing to take note do not mention about your tertiary programmes to CPC, your EP can be canceled in a jiffy.

For leaves during NS, yes it depends on your superior and where you are posted too. I would suggest you consolidate all your leaves so that you can clear it when you ROD. That will save you more than 28 days leave if you did not take any during your NS stint

I don't see how Im wrong?

Anyway Taxico nailed everything right. One trick for you: ask your dad to set up some llc or llp in his state and ask him to write you an employment offer near the end of your ORD. There is a special rule that allows one to ORD earlier by clearing his leave for the purpose of overseas employment. Inform your direct superior and if he approves S1 will cut your chain earlier than your bunk mates. I did this and yes, my mum wrote me the employment letter since she registered a company overseas. It sure beats taking a 14 day overseas leave to the states and coming back on the day of your intended ORD to pack and process the paperwork and fly back to the States again.

And no, they won't bother auditing the company because they have better things to do. My mum was waiting for their call but they are too lazy to even do that. Even if they called there isn't any way for them to find out if I will be doing productive work or not.
