US Aircraft Carrier Dock Location

Post by S2GE » Fri, 16 Dec 2011 12:31 pm

Hello all,

Just moved to the East Coast from the States about 3 months ago. Saw in the Straits that a US Carrier was berthing here. From what I understand its pretty common but not an every day practice.

Where do they dock and how close can you get? I understand that there are a few valuable items (such as shaving kits and such) onboard and it might be difficult to get close, but I want to snap a few photos and if I can get close enough lick a few barnacles. :P

The carrier strike force groups dock at Changi naval base which is north of Tanah Merah ferry terminal.

You can actually tour the carriers from time to time. You need to join the Singapore chapter of the Navy League of the United States. You will then receive invitations to tour. The quality and length of the tour are up to each captain. Some have been short and some have been extensive. You will not get to see the engine room!

Contact [email protected] or check out Facebook.

or check the website

It is also worthwhile to join because you get the opportunity to host saolirs and marines for dinner when the boats are in town.

Thank you SE.

The company I work for does provide some contract services for the US military in SG but I would be delighted to assist further. I have joined the facebook page and emailed the contact you have posted.

I think an aircraft carrier tour would be wonderful, but I am actually pretty excited about joining the League overall. I did not expect that option, but I will definitely do all that I can.

You don't have to be a member of the Navy league to host sailors when they come to town. Just shoot an e-mail to [email protected]
Home Hospitality coordinator
American Association of Singapore

She'll keep you on her list of organizations interested in hosting.

If you look at Changi Naval base on Google Maps, you can actually see the George Washington (CVN-73) docked there in the photo:

Judging by the Wikipedia Article, that was sometime over August 2-6th, 2009:

"From 2 to 6 August 2009, GW made a port call in Singapore where sailors enjoyed some R&R"

I'm sure Geylang and Orchard Tower would have been *blasts* to visit that week :D

Back to the OP, did they have dates when the carrier will be here? I asked to join the FB group. Would love to take a tour if it's an option while it's here.

If we cannot make it to the tour what is the best public area we can have a glance to this warship?

Confusingly the Google image itself says that it was taken in 2011.

I've noticed the copyright dates never seem to line up with Google Maps. I often seen buildings "being built" that I know where finished long before that date. I suspect it's just a blanket copyright date.
