New SAS Admissions Policy

Post by maj248 » Tue, 06 Dec 2011 11:15 pm

What the....

Dear Parents and Family Friends,

You’re receiving this letter because your child is on our wait list for admission to SAS. The purpose of this letter is twofold: first to advise you of your child’s admission status and second to tell you about a change in SAS policies regarding applications and application fee payments.

First, if your child has not been admitted for January 2012 yet, then it’s unlikely that he/she will be enrolled for the Spring Semester. There are always last minute changes but I don’t anticipate significant movement on the wait list at any grade level.

We accept students as spaces become available throughout the school year. Therefore, you are encouraged to keep your child’s application current by sending us his/her school records for this school year. The admissions office will start reviewing applications for August 2012 admission in February. New students will be admitted in March 2012 after current students have re-enrolled.

Second, in response to new government regulations, SAS is implementing a change in SAS policies on applications and application fees. Effective January 1, 2012 the application fee will be $2,500 including GST. The application will be valid for two years from the date of submission. The application fee is non-refundable. In addition, the application fee will no longer be applied to school fees due upon admission.

As a wait list applicant, you have two choices:
1. You may withdraw from the wait list and receive a 50% refund of the application fee originally paid, less a $214 administrative fee. Please note this is according to our current fee policy.
2. You may remain on the wait list. SAS will refund the difference between the application fee you paid and the new fee. Again, the remaining balance is non-refundable and won’t be applied to your child’s school fees upon enrollment.
Please advise the admissions office on your choice to either withdraw or remain on the wait list by emailing us at [email protected]. The finance office also needs to know where to direct your refund. Please note that refunds are made only in Singapore dollars. For more information about refunds, parents may contact [email protected] or call the finance office at 6360-6324.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

I would like to conclude this letter by thanking you for your continued interest in SAS and most of all, your patience and understanding regarding the new application and application fee policies.

Best regards,
Ellen White

Yep, sad but true. When you have a wait list you can make the rules up as you go along.

Is there a practical reason they (and similar places) do not expand or it is just a part of the PR?

Effectively a fee increase for new students. The "applicaton fee" used to be applied against the first semester's tuition. No more. I think the issue is SP is not allowing schools to hold deposits anymore, which in effect this was prior to the change. I think. But, SAS could have taken the high road and said OK, we'll now charge a reasonable application fee of $500 or so. But no, instead they are going to pocket $2500. Yeesh.

The SP gov't really, really needs to step in to ensure schools aren't unnecessarily gouging families. At least SAS is transparent about it, which can't be said for a number of the other schools.

What's frustrating is SAS refers to a change in regulation. However, the change in SAS' policy seems the exact opposite of the change UWC put into place earlier this year.

It just doesn't pass the sniff test.

Exactly. UWC's approach now is to charge about $300 to apply, but need to "apply" each year to stay on the waitlist. Which I suppose is OK, it's a good way of weeding out people who just like to get on lists.

But this, combined with SAS's $12K welcome to SAS fee...jeez.

CIS also changed their policy and is equally gouging new families with a "placement fee" or some such thing.

I'm sure there are many more such stories...
