What is the matter with Singapore's internet?!!!

Post by Buchanan » Sun, 28 Nov 2004 6:14 pm

Dear ALL-concerned:

Well, I am moving over to Singapore soon and the connection TO .SG sites, for example, web-hosts like for THESE FORUMS, hmmm, are WELL SLOW. Of course, this may be due to myself being well-spoilt in Japan with 7 Mbytes per sec in its well-set-up fully-optical 100Mbps connections throughout the country .JP. BUT my MAIN QUESTIONS ARE:

1. How fast do you get from .SG to the rest-of-the-world? [My max. when i was on holiday was about 250Kbytes per sec... way slow..la?!]

2. How fast do you get internally in .SG, but outside your local network?

well, sorry for the rant, but i feel better now.

Cheers me dears.

PS: Is there a proxy server, monitoring conenctions, perhaps... just a though?!!!
I always cheque fur speelling mistakes and other such errorz... ;)

No joke -- there is one. Every single connection you make is logged, monitored and filtered, and precisely 100 sites (including playboy.com) are blocked nationwide.

I just got through then to playboy.com - Never had a problem with internet censorship unless from someones office or government department...

I beleive you can access what you like but in the end they will keep a log of what you do and us it to whack you when they want.

The old "enough rope to hang yourself job"

Ah I see. Interesting. So hopefully the apparent sluggish internet-speeds is a "delayed-and-relayed-internet-connection" thing and not a "low-bandwidth" problem, yes?

Thanks for the replies and for the added info Bafana and jpatoka.

Take acare and cheers.

Seriously? Who's your ISP? I certainly can't access playboy.com from my Starhub account... which is occasionally fairly annoying because, unlike the 17 trillion underaged goat sex sites I can access, there is actually some real content on Playboy (and I don't mean boobies, not that I have anything against them either).
