Tortoise is cute. I wish to keep a tortoise but totally no knowledge on them. Who keeps them? Can guide me how to keep tortoise e.g. how often do I have to feed it; how often do I have to bathe it; how often do I have to change the tank? so on..

Also, where to buy tortoise?

pardon my numerous doubt

:)

I considered thoroughly before the decision of keeping a tortoise :) I understand your concern on it. Thanks for that web link. Btw, is tortoise different from red eared slider (a terrapin) ? I did a google search on both, they look somehow different.

Terrapins are turtles, Tortoises are Tortoises ;)

Tortoises are land animals, Terrapins are semi-aquatic.

That's where my knowledge ends on the matter.

Tortoise are cool animals. They don't say much, don't do much, don't complain much, don't eat much and are generally low maintenance. They aren't really pets that you want to whip out and show your friends, stroke, and play with etc.

They hibernate for 6 months of the year in a box and then come out for a stroll around but tend to sleep a lot for the remainder. They eat vegetables - carrots, celery, potatoes, and drink water.

They live between 50-150 years old. My cousin has one that has been in the family for close to 85 years, and the little bugger is still going strong. Always tries to escape when he is out of hibernation - he's quite famous in the village where they live as he turns up in shops and in the local pub.

About the size of an A5 sheet of paper, if an A5 sheet of paper was tortoise shaped!

Same same, but different!

I did state my knowledge was limited, at least I know a Tortoise was different from a Terrapin and that Terrapins are semi-aquatic!

Close enough I recon! :P :P

thanks all for your replies.. enriched my knowledge..

I think pet shop owners don't really know the difference between tortoise and terrapin, what all pet shops are selling are terrapins instead of tortoise, thanks to the web link given by Ecureilx, thanks to Richie303's initial reply on their difference.

Upon reading BillyB's initial reply, I still prefer tortoise since its low maintenance. BillyB, where did your cousin got his/her tortoise? Size as big as A5 - must be very cute! hope to hear from u soon :)

Tortoises are very expensive.
(And since BillyB said the one in question has been in the family 85 years, I'm not sure knowing where it came from will help you much!).

If you just want something to coo over as 'cute' I think you should get something else. A soft toy maybe?

I've read lots of descriptions of tortoises but this is the first time I've hear "cute" used to describe one. :?
