Relocating from the US to Singapore and have narrowed down our housing options to The Colonnade and a house near Holland Village Does anyone have any experience with life at The Colonnade? Kid friendly? Expat population? Community culture? etc?

We had a look a while back, first problem its an old
condo and feels it. The location while central is not that convenient its still a bit of a trek to shop ( by Singapore standards) The big advantage is they have high ceiling and large units. At the time we where looking for the same amount of rent we could find a 4000 plus sq ft unit in a new block next to all the shops in the same area.

Thanks for the reply. We just got done viewing the
property for The Colonnade for 3rd time. We agree with your opinion of the place. Do you have some other property suggestions that are similar in price? Where did you end up if you don't mind sharing?

We found a very nice place just a minute walk from Tanglin Mall. I just saw a unit with its own pool and Garden in a development next to the Tanglin Post office for around what colonnade is asking.

Might you have the name of the
property you just saw with the pool and garden? I'm heading back to the states on Wednesday and am hoping to have located housing by then. Thanks in advance.

Those are both nice used to stay in the loft but that has smallish unit 2500 sq ft, the Tanglin residence again nice but 4000sq ft units are town houses and that means a big chunk of the floor space is taken up by a 5 storey staircase.
The new place is in between those two I will try and google map it:
Found it 8 Nassim hill, google maps shows it under construction, and the big units are on the ground and first floor, another place worth looking is Nassim park ground floor units have their own pools but its has the same problem as collanade you need to get in the car to go to the shops.

Grange Residence not to be confused with the newer tackier "The Grange"is my favourite (used to live there) though its getting old the layout and design detailing are well thought out and feels alot bigger. Seems like everyone has the same view so apartments there are snapped up even for quite a premium.
Have a look at St Regis Residence, they are having some management issues, though the layout/design in both the flats and common areas are really suspect. Probably a design and build project. ie no venting in bathroom, windows that cant really open and when they do rain comes pissing. Huge upstand/baywindows almost 10 percent of the floor space, makes any windows easily accessible for toddlers. Service lift so small a lot of stuff need to be carried up, and a waste disposal shaft so small even a newspaper cant fit in, Glass wardrobes so you can see the mess etc. oh the car park floods. ( not a lot of time and thought went into it before the building work started.) but the staff and concierge is excellent, and cant beat the location, because of the above issues, you can get some relatively good bargains there.

Hi. My family and I have lived in Singapore for 10 years now and just recently moved into The Colonnade after living in two large houses before (we decided to downsize due to the kids going off to university). We looked at numerous apartments/houses in the orchard/hv/bukit timah area and found The Colonnade to be the best option.
Yes, it may be an older apartment, but when you compare it to ANY new apartment block in Singapore, the rooms and balconies are much larger. The staff is also very nice and because it is owned by The Conrad Hotel Group there is a concierge service as well.
The Colonnade used to be one of the most prestitgous places in live in Singapore when it was built and was even designed by the famous architect Paul Rudolph

The Colonnade has nice big maid's rooms compared to newer
condos. They are of course,
shoe boxes nonetheless and no way I was going to put our helper in there, but by comparison... Also the units vary so much from owner to owner. I just looked at 4 units about 6 months ago, all so different. Same money can get you such a wide variety in the area, keep looking.
