western union is not cheap at all. Depends i guess on how much of your money you're happy to part with, I suppose. As I mentioned in a previous post.. I travel frequently and use my atm card overseas without incurring fees. At most I've paid $5 though cirrus (an atm service), and that's regardless of what amount I withdraw.

Western union on the other hand, the more you send, the bigger the commision you pay the Western Union, which is quite hefty.

Surprisingly, they don't include a table of fees on their website, so that you can make an informed decision before sending money through them.

Another option to opening another account (to open another account, you need to keep a minimum deposit, else there is a service charge), is to buy a prepaid card/money transfer card from Maybank Singapore. The cost of the card is about S$18. It works exactly like the debit card option but without the fees. Everytime you want to send money home. just deposit money into the card using Maybank's cash desposit machine. Or using any banks' internet funds transfer option to transfer the $ into the card. And your family can withdraw money from any cirrus ATM overseas instantly. It's really that good. I have been using it to send money to my kid studying abroad. You can even choose the card design.
