International schools for non-native English speaker kids

Post by Nika » Fri, 09 Sep 2011 7:16 pm

We might be moving to Singapore and need to find suitable school for my 15 years old son (soon to be 16)
His first language is Japanese and English is at a very basic level.
Is there any International Schools accepting and providing support for kids whose native language is not English?
Anyone with same experience?
Any advise or recommendation is highly appreciated

Thank you very much. I did check Japanese schools, there is only one for high school. Unfortunately currently they are not accepting new students, but might resume next April.
I’ve heard that St. Francis might be an option. Any recommendations?

ISS has a program for high school kids whose first language is not english. I believe some other International Schools have ESL programs, but ISS is th eonly one I know for sure.

ISS is a nice, close, family friendly school. I'm sure your son will like it there. Good luck!

In case someone will need in future, here is what I have learned.
Several schools like Chatsworth, OFS, International community school, accept kids with limited in English, but only till junior high school level.
Following schools accept high school kids: St. Francis Methodist School, ACS-Angloinese School, ISS. But all these schools have minimum English requirement level and kids need to pass admission test.

Boffenl, thank you again for very useful information

Hi, you might want to check out Insworld Institute (www.insworld.edu.sg) to see if it suits your needs. English programs are available for those whose English is not their 1st language.

Cheers

Hi Nika,

As far as I know, both Nexus International School and Overseas Family School (OFS) offer ESL programmes all the way up to grade 12. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the same might be true for the German European School Singapore and Dover Court Preparatory School, so it may be worth checking these out too.

Good luck!

Hi Nika,
I am from Taiwan and will be in the same situation as you were. I have two daughters who are 8th and 10th grade respectively. I am moving to Singapore soon and also very concerned my daughters' English proficiency.
I know it has been some years since you posted the original message, but could you please share your experience afterwards?

What's your daughter's first language Simon? There are some Chinese only schools still around in the local system I think.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Hi Nika, is your son 15 years old? What level did he finish in Japan? I m thinking of another option:

English program + University Foundation level.

Hope it helps!
