A Brief Review of Internet Speeds

Post by Strong Eagle » Thu, 01 Sep 2011 11:12 pm

Starhub offered a 'free' upgrade to 50 MbS if I got a new modem, so I got my new Starhub broadband modem today... 139 bux... set it up and ran a speed test.

I'm impressed... ran the test at http://www.speedtest.com.sg... I am the second one on the list below... far more than most, with the exception of one which is almost double mine. Definitely much faster than with my old modem.

Though I'm on optical 50MB but when downloading wmf from emails or anything outside of Singapore streaming, I'm not impressed still some lagging in frames, think there maybe some obsticles not bothered doing a ping on the IP's as it's not going to help much. Though our upgrade from normal 10MB to 50MB optical only cost $7 a month more so I have no real complaint yet!.

The speeds I'm getting domestically in Singapore are fantastic. But is anyone else having a problem with limited speeds connecting to international servers? From what I recall on a 50mbps package I was pulling under 15mbps to HK. Even worse from SF. I heard it is being physically limited by the international infrastructure (underwater cable, etc.), but I'd like to hear other's experiences.

Snap - I just upgraded my SH cable modem and router and am hitting twice the speed I was getting. It is noticeably faster and the modem works much better than the set-up I was using with the old one and a separate router.
