Why is there no Costco, Tesco etc. in Singapore?

Been to two of those places, it was a sad and unpleasant experience. My time in the States is spent doing very different things that would qualify as highlights.

I don't overly miss actual supermarkets, I think Tesco and Walmart are going to make it so butchers or greengrocers become a niche, quaint occupation like a chandler is now. But I do really miss the very few things I cannot get easily or at all that cannot be homemade or substituted.
