Chapter 5.3: Books and Magazines

First, I would like to thank one of my reader for sharing this quote with me after reading the Chapter 5.2: Family Visit. Below is what she wrote which is a description about Face-To-Face Family Visit:

"The husband is inside the iron bars,
the wife is outside the iron bars, looking in,
So near they are only separated by inches,
And yet so distant, like sky and depths of the sea.
What no words utter, their desperate eyes relate,
Before every word their eyes brim with tears.
Who could stand here and watch their meeting unmoved?"

For your information, a notifiication of admission/ transfer will be mailed to your family members after the inmate's admission which will provide infomation and details on the visiting's procedure .

Certain food items, books and magazines can be brought and given to the inmates by their families for the inmates' reading pleasure but it have to be screened (taked about 4 days) and censored before being given to the inmates. This is to prevent any obscene materials or hidden messages to get pass thru to the inmates.

Example: Any photos of rauchy dressed women like in lingeries or bikinis or pics that show abit of chest or stories or articles relating to sex, will be censored.

Only family members are entitled to such visits. Friends who wish to see the prisoners must get the approval of the Prison Dept before they are allowed to visit. The prisoner must make this request.

Anyone who had previously been in prison are not allowed to visit any other prisoners unless they are family member as well as get the permission from Prison Dept.

While on my way back to B4 after my family visit's session, I met and chat with another inmate who was being sentenced to jail due to loan shark activities...

Well if you've done the crime you have to do the time I'd have thought, so I'm not moved, no.

So why post all this irrelevant useless information, when one picture says a thousand words!

Seriously I don't dig the message, as I know the difference between right & wrong and others do to!

JR8 is right, I would question the motive behind it!

I deleted his website last week when he posted a reference to it. (It's the only post that I've deleted thus far) So why are you posting a link to it now? That is his website had you actually bothered to really delve into into it like you do vinegar or Britain stories. He's on facebook as well with a link to his website there also. Because you've given him the exposure, I'll have to allow it to stand are it would appear that another member is recommending the site to our readers. Hoist by your own petard? Hmmmmmmmmm?

Oh, by the way, if you don't dig it, don't read it. It's your choice. I don't read the Airline thread or the PS threads either, it's my choice.

Who gives a hoot what his motive(s) is/are, anyway? As long as he's not breaking any of this forum's policies/rules, it's his prerogative.

Cutting and pasting a summary is fine, the rest is just abuse, so I'm helping him not to abuse, by posting his link. (Hope the OP is happy now and he stops)
I enjoy the comments from the members  So your saying that if people recommend the website it stays,,,, wow watch out folks some people are going to have a field day :P Only kidding

I think its just more logical to say use the website as his signature, rather than freeload all the data. I can recall when i recommend a tailors it gets deleted just because I use the same tailor  besides i have nothing at all against making recommendations of good consumer products even if they are better vinegars  Other websites like this one here for example are useful to people around the world, I think its great to help others too http://www.keynote-engineers.net :)

Though for adventure and a good read go hear http://www.herberts.org/wayne/

Maybe the OP should be allowed to speak for himself.

He seems entirely chilled out though. If anything it's only the mods who seem to be getting worked up.

Newly appointed Senior Prison Officers and Prison Officers have to go through 37 & 32 weeks of residential Basic Officer Course at the Home Team Academy, respectively. This will be followed by on-the-job training for 8 weeks. Prison officers will undergo structured professional training with career advancement into operational/ specialised/ staff positions.
The rank structure is:

Corporal → Sergeant → Staff Sergeant → Chief Warder 1 → Chief Warder 2 → Senior Chief Warder Officer 1 → Senior Chief Warder 2

A Senior Prison Officer must have a degree from a recognised University (any discipline).
The rank structure is:

Rehabilitation Officer 1 → Rehabilitation Officer 2 → Asst Superintendent 1 → Asst Superintendent 2 → Deputy Superintendent 1 → Deputy Superintendent 2 → Superintendent → Asst Director → Deputy Director → Director of Prisons

Is the position of Hangman not on the career path any more ?

Inmate....
I have not read all your stuff, but Gambling, like alcoholism and drug addiction is a spiritual illness/sickness and being in recovery myself, I would say you are better spending your time trying to help those that still suffer....
Most people who lose it all and then see the light start to tell their story in one way or another, but really unless it is turned into a book, it is wasted generally on the lay person, but can help others who suffer the same addiction/spiritual sickness....
I have been in recovery for over 23 years...been there, done that so to speak, not condemning you, but would love to see you help others to recover, as it is so much more beneficial to them....and you...
Thanks

Chapter 5.5: Rotan

Dear Readers, I have not gone through ‘rotan’ stage so whatever I write here is based on hearsay!

In the prison’s world, the most fearful moment for the inmates beside hanging, is ‘Rotan’ (In malay language) which means caning. I was being told that ‘rotan’ session is normally done on every Tuesday and Friday of the week.
A convicted male criminal who is between the ages of 18 and 50 and has been certified medically fit by a medical officer may be subjected to judicial caning, receiving a maximum of 24 strokes of the cane on any one occasion, irrespective of the total number of offences committed. If the offender is under 18 he may receive up to 10 strokes of the cane, but a lighter rattan cane will be used in this case.

The convict will not be caned if he has been sentence to death.

Singaporean law allows caning to be ordered for over 30 offences, including hostage-taking, robbery, gang robbery with murder drug use, vandalism, and rioting. Caning is also a mandatory punishment for certain offences such as rape, drug trafficking, illegal, loansharking activities and for visiting foreigners who overstay their visa by more than 90 days, a measure designed to deter illegal immigrant workers.

A rattan cane four feet (1.2 metres) long and half an inch (1.27 cm) thick is used for prison and judicial canings. The cane is soaked in water beforehand to make it heavier and more flexible.

Caning is in practice always ordered in addition to a jail sentence and never as a punishment by itself. It is administered in an enclosed area in the prison, out of view of the public and other inmates. Those present are limited to the inmate, prison wardens, medical officers, the caning officer and sometimes high-ranking prison officials to witness the punishment.

An inmate sentenced to caning receives no advance warning as to when he will be caned, and is notified only on the day his sentence is to be carried out. In the caning room, the inmate is ordered to strip naked and receives a medical examination by the prison doctor to check whether he is medically fit for caning, by measuring his blood pressure and other physical conditions. If the doctor gives the green light, the inmate then receives his caning, but if he is certified unfit for punishment, he is sent back to the court for his prison term to be increased instead. A prison official confirms with him the number of strokes he is to receive.

The inmate is then led to the A-shaped frame (called a "caning trestle") and his wrists and ankles secured tightly to the frame by strong leather straps in such a way that he assumes a bent-over position on the frame at an angle of close to 90° at the hip, with his posterior protruding. Protective padding is placed on his lower back to protect the vulnerable kidney and lower spine area from any mis-strokes so that only his buttocks are exposed to the cane. The officer administering the caning takes up position beside the frame and delivers the number of strokes specified in the sentence, at intervals of 10 to 15 seconds. He is required to put his full force into each stroke. The strokes are administered all in one caning session, unless the medical officer certifies that the inmate cannot receive any more strokes because of his condition, in which case the rest of the strokes are converted to additional prison time.

After the caning, the inmate is released from the frame and receives medical treatment. Antiseptic lotion is applied and the wounds left to heal. Where a large number of strokes is given, there is long-term scarring of the buttocks.

I was also being told by some of the inmates that the screams of the victims after each stroke of the whip makes one lose all appetite for food. The cane breaks skin and draws blood. Doctors are on hand to administer treatment and to assess if the individual can take more punishment...

Now who were saying caning is not barbaric, would cane their children, is "ok" for some pretty eye-opening things (vandalism, rioting, loansharking, foreigners who overstay their visa), is good for society, etc. ?

Reading this is almost as bad as that LiveLeaks clip of a caning session.

The materials - "A-frame", "rattan cane", etc. - will no doubt appear in a museum one day, in the same wing as archaic doctors' and dentist's tools and torture chamber implements. But wait, these are torture implements.....

No, you "wrote" the majority of it once again copying and pasting somebody's else work and neglecting to put a reference. As for an ex-convict who claims to be rehabilitated your persistence in violating the law starts to give me some thoughts. Please edit your posts and place the reference whenever you borrowed some of the material. This is yours not our duty to do this and this is the second and last warning.
