Jogging shirtless....

Post by joel1975 » Sun, 21 Aug 2011 5:33 pm

Hello all....

I am an African American student currently attending NUS.

I occasionally go on jogging runs, and today I actually decided to do a little running outside and inside the school.

Needless to say, I usually jog without my shirt.

I looked online (variuos sites that are Singapore related, and came to the conclusion that there was nothing wrong) However, one of my acquaintances today told me it was 'indecent exposure' in Singapore to jog without a shirt...and I told him he was the first to say so.

Just out of curiousity, I was going to post my question on some of those other Singapore related forums, but I wanted to (hopefully) get this mystery solved since I've actually heard different things.

Thanks...

EDIT/UPDATE: Alright, a text message from the study abroad liason at NUS said 'I can' run, but it's not considered nice; and not so many do it so it becomes an attraction.

(I told her that I didn't mind the attention!)

So, now I know.

I agree with your friend: If it is on the beach or swimming pool it's ok but on the street NO!

I just spoke to two Singaporean students on my floor; one who is another friend of mine sometime ago while in the lounge area.

When I told them the different messages, one (who is a young man who went through the required service) said it's nothing new. The other, who is a girl, said go ahead an continue with what I was doing...if I've been doing it for so long and no one really said anything about it except my other friend who initially said.

I mentioned how it's somewhat like the States where we (those of us in the US) tend to have some who are overly conservative, and like to have people covered up no matter what.

(I was actually thinking about going so far as to go to a police station and seeing what they say! :)) Speaking of which, I jogged shirtless past campus security several times, and nothing was said. Of course, I've also seen other students shirtless.

I guess it depends on the person; something my fellow students in the lounge said.

When in Rome mate..........you should really follow the guidance on etiquette here. It isn't common despite there being nothing wrong with it - as long as you don't have a giant gut and more hair than chewbacca!!

Remember, less is more at times!!

I see male locals jogging shirtless but they're pretty ripped so good for them (and I am still to see a female jogging shirtless). If, however, you think you'll scare kids and small animals, better put a shirt on.

On a more serious note, I guess it wouldn't hurt if you carry a light shirt in case some prude calls you out.

Prude? Do you know how hard it is; to get weird looking nippels, strange holes in the chest, tacky tatoo's, lobster skin, pumped up veins and men boobs out of my head? :?

IMHO, I don't think its much of an issue over here, don't think it gets THAT much attention. In fact, you'll probably get more attention if you're ripped and really buff, as compared to just being lean.

btw, I love some of the replies above... LOL
lol you guys have a great sense of humour.

Cheers

Wear an Ah Beng string vest best of both worlds.

This Sunday morning, near my school (NUS)...I saw a older Singaporean man about late 50s/early 60s jogging shirtless.

I now have an idea of what I may be doing today or tomorrow... (although, the weekends I usually don't exercise since those are my don't-care-about-calories-days)... 8-)

We have older local men jogging shirtless every morning around Serangooon MRT neighbourhood as well. Not too many though.

Hey Joel

Its no biggie to run around shirtless in Singapore. I live in the Bukit Timah area and see shirtless joggers ALL the time and no one seems to bat an eyelid.....in fact some of the stuff the women joggers wear is pretty 'less' too lol and apparently its all good!

As the title suggests, I just wanted to (again) thank everyone for their replies. Alas, I'm no longer in Singapore...but I do hope to return for grad school....

*crossing fingers*

I'm sure I'll be looking to this site for answers to other questions...once I (hopefully) return.

Best-

:)
