Calmday, I was wondering the same thing. I was afraid, being a dinosaur today, I'd missed out on some new slang.

Singapore is one of the safest places you can go but I wouldn’t put it at the top of a culture list. If you want Prada and Gucci this is your place. If you want to see the world and other cultures pick someplace else a little more adventuress.

Oh and the BS about people no liking Americans is just that. BS. When you get old enough to see through the politics you will see exactly why the mainstream media and a certain person who is now POTUS want you to believe that.

the more i talk to people outside the US im seeing that its not true! we've been told this forever so thats why i wanted to see what yalls thoughts were on my friend and i coming there. out of respect for everyone there, if no one wants there we wouldnt come.
we really just want to get out of the US and see the world, we're 25 years old and we've seen just about everything here. i love meeting people from other countries that come here and we hear so much about where their from and we wanna see it now!
every year we want to find another place to go but we would like to start there. im not sure about my friend but i no im falling in love with place the more i read and hear about it...haha i might not want to come back to the US after being in Singapore.

calmday, that eyeball is seriously creepy. :)

my husband still will not attend the US 4th of July event and is very uncomfortable broadcasting our "Caucasian-ness". Although he is Canadian I've just been able in the last few months to get him to go to the American Club--he will not visit during the day or on weekends when it's very crowded.

It's a bit of paranoia, but he feels safe and I'm happy to keep him in his little bubble. But it doesn't stop me from taking our daughter to the 4th of July event or talking about the US with neighbors.

Just be aware that not everyone is your friend (just like in the US) and you'll be fine.

In general Americans and most westerners are well accepted in Singapore, however that doesn't stop the Singapore government warning people to be on their guard against terrorist activities, which is a real threat, though Singaporeans take it with a pinch of salt, like most people!

As an American female you are worth plenty of $ to those with criminal intent, so roaming the Singapore Islands you need to be alert to the risks, even though the odds are in your favour, doesn't mean to say you will not be unlucky!

Remember what Clint Eastwood said in Dirty Harry 'Are you feeling lucky'

Doesn't matter where in the world anyone goes, they need to be prepared for the worst and not think that it will never happen to them, but to plan for the worst scenario, preparation for the unexpected may just save your butt! Though there is no need for paranoia you must not set yourself up for an easy hit!

Think of the worst areas of the USA and avoid showing your naiveness, sillyness, and arrogance and you should be fine!

But don't believe there is no crime here, murders, robbery, and sexual assaults, can happen here as anywhere else.

We don't trust anyone...never have and never will now matter where we are. The US has its f*cked up people and we always no whos around us and what their doing. We're going to act the way there as we do here but with our wall still up to people we don't know. However we're also the most nicest people you could ever meet and would do anything for anyone in need of help but at the same time don't take our kindness for weakness.

We're really coming there cause i've been talking to this guy for about 3 months online. i picked to come there in June cause thats when his birthday is and we also started talking about week before then. if things dont work out from now till than...how cares we're still coming there! we're so excited and we're not letting anything or anyone stop us now :D

i really wanted to know what everyone else has to say about the place and really make sure we would be welcomed. with or with out him we're still going to make this the best of this trip!

lol now.....where is the best place to stay at there!

Wait.

You don't trust people and you're flying here to meet some guy you--I'm assuming--you've not met in real life?!?

I should write that down for a story idea. --> http://forum.singaporeexpats.com/ftopic66050.html

Funnily enough I know a SGn woman who is doing this in reverse right now. Gone to New York State and married a man she met on the internet (having never met him before).

Being SGn she's also taken her entire tribe along as well.

Lucky him lol.
