Singapore Expats

Hello,
I am probably moving to Singapore from New york in a few months and looking for a school for my 4years old son.

I am looking for a International School ( prefer reasonable one..) that
has sun policy. I am concerned about UV in singapore for my son.
Does anybody know the school which has the sun policy, such as
outside play is out of sun peak hours, wear hat/sunscreen always etc...

Your help much appreciated !

Not sure of specific school policies but this being the tropics, common sense--or more like individual comfort--dictates that people stay out of the sun during peak hours. It's scorching hot and very unpleasant so people generally don't bother with policies.

In fact, that's one of the few instances that the local population actually displays common sense?

The other day, we saw some walking with their umbrellas open.

It was overcast but not raining.

UWC and Tanglin have such a policy. Others aren't so anxiety-ridden.

I actually delivered my daughter early because of a melanoma discovered during my pregnancy, so sun exposure has been a huge issue with us.

My husband sent our daughter to pre-school for the first few weeks wearing a sticker that said:

Please don't let me play outside without my SPF!

It worked REALLY well! Plus we bought huge bottles of sun-block and kept the supply up by the door to the play-yard. He was verr pro-active. Now that she's older she knows what her skin can take and carries a small bottle of sunblock to school for days when she knows she'll be outside.

Sorry I don't know of any schools that have a policy on sun--but many do have covered playgrounds and use good common sense when it comes to fair-skinned kids (although they can be a bit obtuse about darker skinned kids who can also get sunburned!).

We noticed that local school seems more aware of UV problem.
Tanglin and UWC could be too expensive for us...
we may need to consider local school.

I am teaching my son(4) for sun protection too.
Also good to know that they cover play grounds.

I don't think there is a nationality that takes sun protection more seriously than Australia. Hats are compulsory in most Australian schools and are here in Singapore as well.

Hats are compulsory for most preschools here now too--especially if they don't have covered playgrounds.

If you teach your child the importance of SPF--and give the school the sunblock--I think you'll find zero problems.

My friends send their little ones to St Joseph's Elementary School and they have a "no hat no play" policy that is applied very strictly. Heard other good things about it as well.
