SG Driver's License after renouncing SG Citizenship

Post by snuggleball » Fri, 22 Jul 2011 11:35 pm

Can the Singapore driver's license (valid for life) still be used in Singapore after renouncing Singapore citizenship?

We are now foreigners of Singapore, returning for a vacation ;) Is the Singapore driver's license still valid?

Eg, if we were to rent a car in Singapore, it could be less hassles with the car rental companies to simply produce the Singapore's driver's license; rather than paying extras and going through the hassles of obtaining an International driving permit for our foreign driver's license.

Or is that totally illegal now that we are no longer its citizens?

I've had a Singapore class C & D license since 1983 and I'm not a citizen nor will I ever be unless they allow dual citizenship with the US. In fact, I got my Singapore License while here on a bog standard SVP (you cannot do that any more). You don't need to be a citizen to keep your license, in fact, all you need to do is have a valid local address (therein might be your problem if you don't have rellies here). But as it's good for many years, I doubt that that would be a real problem either in the short term.

Thank you for your prompt reply! :)

No addresses are printed on the SG driver's license. After so many years, I have no idea which address is held in the database, and whether they are still valid (most likely not). Should I even bother to check? If so, from which organization?

On a separate note, if we were to visit Malaysia and rent a car there, is there a problem with using the Singapore driver's license? I understand holders of Singapore driver's license are not allowed to drive a Malaysian car. I wonder if the same rule applies to rental cars?

First que : No problem. It is not a major

Second que : Most rental car company allows and usually there is additional charges on insurance
