Relocating during school year question

Post by Brooklynjenn » Sat, 09 Jul 2011 5:47 am

We are likely moving to Singapore in September, after school has started here in California. My daughter turns six in August and will be in first grade. I have been perusing the International School sites and am a bit confused about this K1 K2 thing. Would my daughter go back to K2 if she had already started 1st grade here? Are they equivalent? Since we will likely come back I don't want her to fall back a grade when we come back. Can someone please help me understand how the school systems compare?

Thanks!

If you put her into a school system that starts in August you should have no problem - the birthdate should fall in the same system as US - but best to check with the school. If you start her in a school where the school year begins in January then she may go up or down a grade depending on her birthdate. Your biggest hurdle will be getting your child into a Grade 1 class as the early primary years seem to be the most congested. Best to call the schools directly and go from there.
