I understand there's a couple of concert promoters here (Greenhorn, LAMC, Midas) but to bring a band here do you have to go through them or can any one do it? I'd like to try as I may have some interesting contacts from the UK who have asked me to find out.
Can you just go up to a venue and ask the rent price and then just go ahead and book a gig?
Has anyone done something like this in the past? The bands would be medium-high profile.

Organising a concert in Singapore
I'm not sure as to the legal position, but the questions I'd be asking are
- have you done this before. Do you know all the bits and pieces that need to go into this type of thing?
- have you done this before in a foreign country? Do you know all the bits and pieces to do this type of thing?
- do you know what the specific requirements in Singapore are re taxes for entertainers and other regulations?
If you answer "no" to any of the above questions then I would suggest that you use a company who has this type of experience - both for your own sanity and your "clients" (sounds like they're friends / acquaintances to me)
Perhaps don't use one of the co's listed above if they're the "big-dudes". Ask other entertainment acts who "manages" them here and then speak to those people.

Thanks carteki. No, I'm not experienced at all (organized some stuff at university years ago).
I'm just trying to help some friends out... out of curiosity mostly (and it's fun to research this stuff!).
I'll research some more local promoters as well.
And thanks savestheday for your input and well-informed insight over the PMs.
