Hi all, my family is relocating to Singapore and we have been looking at
condos to rent the past week. Is anyone familiar with the Sophia road / Mount Sophia neighborhood? We saw some nice new developments there and just wondering if its a good and convenient area for family. (We noticed there's an art school near by, is there a lot of students living there? would it be noisy at night?)
Thanks

Why not go and take a look at the area another time to see how it feels, take a walk around to see where the local shops are, whether it's noisy etc...? Surely it makes sense to do a little legwork yourself as someone else's idea of quiet might be your idea of noisy

The SOTA (School of The Arts) there is a high school, so there is less of a problem with that. You also have SMU, NAFA and La Salle, all offering tertiary education in that same area. Students from those places you will find in some of the buildings around there. However, it is a relatively expensive area so only selected buildings around there. Most like they are not the same buildings your family will want to stay in.
Access to Mount Sophia by foot is a fair climb, so not too many people go up there just to hang out. But it is worth visiting the area at various times of the day or night to see if you are happy with the neighbourhood.

I like the neighborhood (lived there early 90s), as it is vvv central and yet peaceful.
You used to be able to cut through the Cathay and get a lift up. Useful at 3am with a hot-to-trot dolly in tow
Now there's just 'the staircase to hell' it seems. Though I did it last year - for reasons of nostalgia - by going up in the Cathay and bunging the sec guard at Sophia Apartments (?) $5 to let me through their building.
Long and short of it though. Either you need the ease of access to Dhoby Ghat, or you need a car, as the walk up Sophia Road is a bugger of a slog, esp with shopping etc.
