Not sure why I never post on this thread.

That last post brought back memories, the California scene at that time was both unique and had some cohesiveness across bands.

DK were more raw but there is some connection with this band, not unlike later connections between Blink 182 and Green Day.

I suppose there are parallels with the Atlanta and Seattle scenes, the former I was still interested in that kind of thing, the latter I never got into. Like I think REM and U2 were great for their first 2 albums, after that they got trite.

But what do I know, much of what I listen to is from the 70s.

A weird Album IMO. Not really fitting and matching up with the earlier ones when JM was still alive.

It conjours up images of a fuelled road-trip. I like it, but I suppose you need to be OK with it being poetry put to music. I didn't know how it got made for a long time, I just thought of it as whimsical and dream-like :)

I am very ok with a poetry with the music but rather have it sung than recited. Somehow it does not work for me with this album. On the other hand lets factor in I am not a native speaker and I probably miss a lot on some levels.

Around 30 years ago a friend and myself did a kinda 3 month long road-trip right around India... just we did it by train.

One place we stayed was a small hotel, maybe 20-30 rooms. The receptionist was really curious what music I had on my walkman and asked if he could borrow the tape. Sure, why not.

A while later I was resting in the room wondering what he would make of it, American Prayer... probably not what he might have been expecting hehehe...

I don't know who got more of a surprise though, as shortly afterwards he put the tape on some kind of internal PA that had a speaker in each room and corridor. That was truly surreal, and I think Jim would have liked it too

Trying to explore more systematically The Stranglers recently...

Lyrics part, a parody of the culmination scene from Blade Runner?

How deep do you want to go? :) Back in those days we youngsters tended to identify (and be identified with) one, or a very few bands. The Stranglers were my band, and I saw them live about 10 times between 1978-1982.

The original long-time vocalist Hugh Cornwell wrote a book 'Song by song' some years back, around '96-97 (???), I've just checked and I can confirm it's not mentioned in there. So can only assume it was written after he left the band.

p.s. I was asked to do the reading in chapel at school and argued that I was not in a position to do so as I believed in the Men In Black (a concept and lyrical device of the Stranglers) rather than God and Christianity. For that the neanderthals saw fit to cane me lol... frankly I still think it was quite creative!

This is how I'd always like to remember them.... classic...

The Stranglers - Live Battersea Park 1978

p.s. Do note there is almost nil sound during the crowd shots in the first 30 seconds of the vid. That's fine and intentional.

Steve Perry - Don't Stop Believin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W9SatPrhmU

Apparently Journey are playing SG sometime early next year: my female rellies all seem to be wetting themselves!!!

p.s. Apparently Perry has left (even I find that rather sad, Journey were a core karaoke band for me lol)... and the new guy is called Pineda...

Just don break that rice-bowl guys... ok?

p.s. Think you can sing? Well try this...

Journey - Don't Stop Believin' (Live in Japan)

Might sound simple.... but do NOT be fooled, it is a bugger to sing. I mostly stick to Iron Maiden and 'Ozzy Osbourne' (Black Sab), Ozzy was always vocally as flat as a board and so not so challenging to sing (I'm thinking of Crazy Train, which is an all or nothing staple of mine, i.e. give it ALL, or don't even bother trying!).

Nice! The Killers were 'of a time and place' for me.

NYC '7/8... then I married her and moved to SG.
