The term is sustain no 's', and The Edge (oh how I bristle with names that start with "The"...) has been doing that delay/sustain/echo/reverb thing since they started in '79.

I was being a bit facetiously vague knowing that song unfortunately all too well and some of their other pallid stuff that followed their formative years.

It was to add to JR8's perspective on how bands some change and loose their mojo along the way, and, my point of how many of those who know those tired pop tunes may not even know their good stuff (subjective disclaimer) from Boy and October.

Same goes for INXS, what a damn good album Shaboo Shabaa was.

Like this I Will Follow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2BqLlVHlWA if you can get past Bono's ridiculous dancing. Hey, it was the 80s.

OK.
Sorry for pluralising it (it was for emphasis).
Fixed it.

Yes, he loves his delay and reverb.
However, he actually had a new guitar at the time of "With or Without You" that allowed him to really extend the sustain. He must have been "playing" it for the video.

They look soooo young, like teenagers.
And yes, the dancing looks ridiculous. :o
This version might be easier to watch:

Wow!
Pre-glam Bowie.
Amazing.

Thanks for resurrecting this.
I must have missed it when you posted it back in 2013.

Interestingly, earlier that same year (2013) Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield did an interesting update on "Space Oddity" at the end of his ISS mission:

LOL - love it! I wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't have mentioned it.

I believe Brah is a gittar player, so he should have some tips. You're wise to consider this now, as the humidity can do bad things to timber (incl antique furniture), warp it here, then later when you head home somewhere more temperate/dry it 'unwarps' which can mean it cracks.

Nice one!

I saw them live 30 years ago now (sigh). Awesome. Tiny place, one of the venues at my then uni.

Interesting sound, like 'new romantic' [ref: the look] but on the 'alt' side. Reminds me a bit of how Killing Joke evolved, and others.

Talking of evolution, they started out as the Southern Death Cult c'78/79. They were played by the eponymous late night Radio One DJ John Peel, and if you look back at the stuff he enjoyed (The Fall etc*100), many of them now stand as historically influential bands, within the context of the evolution of popular music.

After the Southern Death Cult, they morphed/'rebranded' into Death Cult, and later still simply The Cult. There was a thing back then amongst some bands about eschewing being pigeon-holed, about perpetual reinvention, even as radical as changing the bands name.

Athletico Spizz 80 (circa 1980) were similar, AFAIR they were previously styled Spizz Oil, and Spizz Energi... and perhaps others. Maybe a new name each year or so. I suppose it serves to pre-warn you to have no preconceptions. I wonder if there are other examples of this approach amongst 'averagely+ important' bands...
