i'll post a band named Cirith Ungol which was formed sometime in the eighties and which were heavily influenced by Tolkien's LOTR and a lot of their songs have the same theme, and this band had some really creative artwork on their album covers

Another group I've never heard and think I like. When I saw "mindblowing" I had to check, thinking it was something technical and, which it's not so much as lyrical.

While it didn't blow my mind, which is not easily blown though there is no shortage of mind-blowing stuff out there, it is quite a nice solo, and reminds me of something else - I will try to figure that out and post it. At first thought it's a bit Satriani, a bit like something from a Steven Wilson solo album, and one part something else.

Maybe I should post what I consider a mindblowing solo.....

@brah they are an old band, formed in the nineties and now disbanded.
They started off as a typical death metal band with screamo vocals and heavy riffs. but then progressed to suicidal ( not so much emo) themes, most of their songs are quite melodic and especially the solos and guitar tones are crisp and unique.

Interesting. I still don't get the screamo thing, and I've hear some bands that I think are are good until that weird singing starts, then I have to switch it off, I can't take that stuff seriously, and wonder what kind of dark lives those people live.
Same goes for anything death, suicidal, etc. I guess I got boring as I got older.

its a common theme ( the death, gloomy,dark, sad ) among Scandinavian bands, I think its because of the winters that drive them to write this kind of music.
I've used to listen to this music as an angst ridden teenager and in my early twenties, a few rejections here and there , plus i lived in an area with not too many friends and I didn't like anything remotely Indian aka bollywoodish this was my perfect antidote.

What I alluded to in an earlier post 1-2 pages back, you may even know them / him, but they are no where near as heavy as the stuff you listen to. So don't laugh... Weird space metal stuff.

This is a side project for this Dutch Metal guy, and I don't think they take themselves too seriously about their lofty lyrics or subject matter, but I find some of their music pretty good, the the vocals are quite well done.

Plus they have on the project stars from other, mostly Euro, Metal bands, and, the great "Sir" Russell Allen of Symphony X.

I started checking them out a couple of years ago and they kind of grew on me.

Wow, it's starts out really Black Sabbath, gets some 'new wave' lead gittar. Yeah in part the lead guitarist is channelling Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy). The 'loose feel' of the composition is very 'new wave' in style (to me).

Personally, I prefer a deep growl over screaming and just plain gravelly-voiced singing; I can take it over select parts of a song (given proper context), just not the whole song. E.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpyHWh4y9Ss

I think it’s usually stuff you get into during your ‘angry youth’, and it stays with you in later life. When I was at that stage I was into the likes of Smash it up by the Damned, Anarchy in the UK by the Sex Pistols etc. and that whole nihilistic scene. Now of course my outlook has matured and moved on, but I’m still very fond (nostalgically) of the music I was into back then, and can smile about the angry but hopelessly futile idealism within a lot of the lyrics. Put another way, I doubt you’re going to grow up only ever a fan of charts music, and then suddenly discover and like death-metal at 50. Perhaps it’s a process of early desensitisation? I don’t get ‘growling’, it’s generally pretty damned tiresome (to me), but others enjoy it... so each to their own [I’m trying very hard not to ‘become my father’!!]

Wouldn’t surprise me at all. If you spend 3+ months a year in twilight/darkness it can really mess with your head. No surprise they have the highest rates of alcoholism (despite the highest prices in the world) and suicide.

I won't laugh at people because they listen to music that isn't metal or it's variants, or because it is too soft.
I liked this band Star One but not the female vocals, very progressive reminds me of so many bands of this genre.

The bands/artists themselves stopped defining sub-genres a long time ago.

Speaking of Sevendust, I just bought their latest album off of Google Play (well, it was over two months ago). It's an acoustic, studio-recorded album (as opposed to their last acoustic effort which was a recording of a live show). Good stuff; how did I ever discover this little-known band from Atlanta.
