Something else I just came upon tonight. A 'bio' of the Sex Pistols, giving perspectives from all angles (band, producers, managers, lables). Considering the whole it really rings true. Amazing to think it was 40 years ago now... [50 mins]

I suspect RW pretty much passed me by since by the time I was aware of him he was (IIRC) in Yes's later years, who weren't my 'young and angry' cup of tea at the time :) And that being such, there was no reason to consider the Yes line-up and start digging backwards looking for gold.
Looking at his Wiki entry is just amazing, really. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Wakeman From how he made it so young. To how his discography includes 90 solo albums: ***90***!

I started playing 'Six Wives' and immediately realised that I need to allot it time for more than casual listening. [At 2:00 I was wondering if he's channelling Joe Cockers 'Let's get stoned'... :)]
Hopefully I'll have time to give it a full spin later today...
Interesting...I always got more of a Gospel thing from that...

If you haven't yet heard the whole thing, you might want to try the shorter excerpts clip and then recognize the parts of those songs in the complete versions.

If you like 6WOH8 you might like his Journey To The Center of The World, not as neo-Classical, but some good music with the story narrated.

Re your mention of The Strawbs, the three-part first song on this album is worth a listen, this album is considered their pinnacle release.

For some reason, maybe being the same era, The Strawbs always reminded me of another such early Prog band call Nektar.

Neither The Strawbs or Nektar are really in the league of some of their contemporaries like Yes and Genesis, but they hold nostalgic for me. Like a lot of other good stuff most of their music didn't make it across the pond, but one progressive (as in the real sense of the word, not Prog Rock) NY radio station would play the whole albums when they came out (which is the only way to really appreciate this kind of thing) and I was lucky to have heard them.

Would be remiss when talking early Prog and Hammonds and Emerson to not make mention of the "German ELP", unmistakeably and unashamedly influenced but still with their own voice and a couple quite good albums, and a few really bad ones. The good ones are Prog classics. For those like me who never got enough of ELP due to their minimal catalogue, Triumvirat were a blessing who came to me in the same way as did The Strawbs and Nektar.

However, like a lot of music from that time, these are the kinds of works that can be best appreciated by hearing the full albums and more than once.

Some of these ^ links I'm going to have to come back to when I have some down-time... looking forward to having a chance.

Meanwhile this one crossed by radar today. I think it was spurred by a comment RAJM made about bush.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3kcRLEnL88
'IN THE BUSH by MUSIQUE'. As performed on the TV prog Soul Train in 1978. Gotta love the studio audience, some very tight moving cool cats indeed :) In fact didn't Daft Punk do a retro style video of their hit, as if it were done before a 70s Soul Train audience? .... vv cool and amusing :)

For a mature audience there's always the ... er... peculiar bordering on surreal but no less enthusiastic home-aerobics version by Tengobaila -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TC705nUfSU

Remember the Future - that brings back some memories.
Thanks.

I always liked how they finished off Pictures at an Exhibition with "The Nutrocker."
Here's ELP having some fun with it in a live version:

Keith Emerson - one more name added to the list, but the music will live on.

Maybe need to hear the original to make sense of the timing...

Never heard that, it's a great version, though I don't think it's the original but surely an early live of it because they still had the spark.

Pretty sad actually, how good they were at that point, before Crosby, who sounds great here, got so messed up on drugs.

Around the same time, Stills' band Manassas, who I never really knew or heard and don't think they had anything memorable played on the radio so didn't reach many, but easy to see from this they were a tight band with some notable players like Chris Hillman (The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Byrds) and the rhythm section from the CSNY Deja Vu and other albums.

I correct myself - the 2nd song was famous and got airplay, but I think as a Stills remake on one of his solo albums.

Stills has an underrated depth of Soul and Blues in him, easy to see from the end of this clip.

Speaking of which, a Stills solo song I really liked when it came out, with his tasteful wahwah pedal. Turn Back the Pages - Stephen Stills

Then Young and Stills did their own thing together, with this hit from it, you can probably guess what it's about

I just meant.... the timing is slightly unorthodox, and I need to x-ref to the original (any early version, rather than a k-box lyric-less cover) to mentally karaoke the lyrics into the lyric-less version.
Quite unusual. I know the song well. I know how to sing along to prompted lyrics, but the timing in that song isn't straight forward (well, not to me :)). Especially when I haven't heard it in a while.

Don't so many of them.... [sigh]
Like I maybe said I saw CSN in Singapore (of all places) only 2-3 years back. One of the more expensive gigs I've ever been to, but it was still just incredible.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out further, and your other suggestions....
Good stuff. Thanks for the tips.

ps. Shame CSN rifted from Young. Their sound together was something really awesome to me. Though NY seems to have recently journeyed off up Planet Wazoo to some extent.

"Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" - Crosby Stills & Nash (Singapore) [3/15]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5YpUcxiPCg

Wish there was a vid of the whole night, it was really sweet, and they were '''very gracious''' [3 encores etc]

ps. I'd already known this song 30+ years by then; it was the thing of myth and legends...

CROSBY, STILLS, NASH Woodstock 1971

So finding out they were playing SG was about as nutz as finding out The Prodigy were doing likewise... No more so, considering how paths cross, and time passes, it was a once in a lifetime chance.

'Cream - Badge' [at a total guess I'll estimate '67-70]
---

Love this song, for some reason (as with Traffic) it always reminds me of being in Manhattan. Time+place perhaps. Love the composition which is so 'alt', so non-standard, compared to say a standard modern 4-chord song. Goes through a 'reprise' at 1.10m, and effectively totally reinvents itself, develops that nicely, then abruptly continues on the original theme at 2.10m. Not bad for a 2.45min track. Then leaves you absolutely hanging unresolved at the end :)

The Eagle-eyed will spot George Harrison in the featured pix, IIRC he wafted in/out of the band at this time.

Still, can get plenty of dramatic air-gittar/goreng in to make up for being off-key, distract your friends ah? :-D

Rolling Stones - Paint It Black'

Perhaps my biggest nemesis, but give me a few beers and no doubt I'll try yet again to finally master it :) It sounds straight-forward. If you aren't prostrate on the floor at 3mins gasping for air you aren't trying hard enough. Sustaining to the end is (IME) simply impossible; the original recording/studio release is even clearer and more sustained than this version...

p.s. A couple of other fun/challenging ones...

Enya is like a candy. It's not real food. Sounds like cliche sh*t but it comes down to that and I like candies from time to time. Actually you another favourite (IIRC), I think they could have came up with something if they were given more time...
