I put that on and my wife asked (from the next room) if I was feeling ok. Nuff said.

Ram Jam - Black Betty
Like Golden Earring also Dutch. This one derived from an American slavers song.

p.s. This is (probably) the slavery link:

Now I know New York (where Ram Jam are from) was originally New Amsterdam but claiming that makes them Dutch is a bit of a stretch :)

Maybe you were thinking of Focus, Dutch prog rockers from around the same time. Here is their famous track Hocus Pocus, an instrumental with yodelling :)

LOL [genuine], good one! #-o
Damn it's not the first time I've made that kind of mistake. I used to think Metallica were Swedish, not just think it *I absolutely knew it*. It took an argument over an hour or more to convince me that they weren't, so deep was my belief. And another: For some reason I came to *know* that the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are from Bristol, England. Heaven's knows now how I came to that conclusion, but that took another fierce debate to debunk it  There's probably a word for this just knowing and yet being completely wrong, well, apart from stupidity...  So, thanks for the correction. [example3: I used to know that The Scorpions were British, I mean come on, why for a start would a German band have an English name?... #-o ].

Focus I know well (Jan the guitarist is a friend). It was probably Focus and King Crimson that together were my initial introduction into er... 'prog rock', 30 odd years ago now. I seem to have switched attention over several genres over the years but prog-rock is one that keeps holding my interest. Perhaps because the genre doesn't have clear limits, there's always something new, a new interpretation by a newly discovered band to check out...

Right, so your point brings to mind something I learned last week, but haven't had a chance to look in to yet: Apparently PJ Proby was a member of Focus for a time... WTH was that all about?
And secondly... I have a couple of Van der Graaf generator albums too. Now you have me second-guessing myself, and 'I must immediately' confirm that where I think they're from is correct

Well there you go, just wikipedia'd that and sure enough PJ Proby recorded an album with Focus, how bizarre. I'm a bit young to be a true prog aficionado but I must admit what I do hear I quite like, even the yodelling. :)

That's sent me on a prog wiki exploration, VdGG are from England (Manchester) and are apparently still recording and touring. Which reminds me I saw Wishbone Ash in the UK a few years back (2009 maybe) with a mate who's a guitar nut, only one original member and whole lot less hair than the 70's but very entertaining.

re: Focus with PJ Proby.

Reply: 'Someone left a cake out in the rain'.

Which IIUIC translates a 'someone is nuts'. If that's so, odds on that person will be (deliberately vague) the Focus member who was chief-yodeller.... hehe...

I was convinced that Kajagoogoo were Aussies until a few years ago.

Oh, another (in)famous Dutch band (that most probably thought from American given the song that made them famous) Diesel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c93aaCza_dY

Love or hate it, the production is quite well done.

Agree re: the production. Also yes they do a good impersonation of being American (vocals/style). Wouldn't have guessed otherwise if you hadn't have mentioned it.
I can't say I know the song. I had a light-bulb moment at the chorus, and found it familiar. Then realised it sounds as if it's lifted directly out of the CSN song Marrakesh Express.

Kajagoogoo => Berlaaaast from the past! I remember them as nasty teen-pop radio fodder. But then I can't say I've heard any of their hits for decades now, so maybe (rather doubtful) it might interpret differently to me these days...

I listened to them not so much for their music but Nick Beggs who was/is a remarkably good musician.

Level 42 - Lessons In Love

That 'effortless' fret-less bass had it's time. Still very easy on the ear.

Prefab Sprout - The King of Rock 'N' Roll

A dream-like track, of the kind that made a theme to my late teens. Only confident and carefree times spawn whimsical music like this...
