KY jelly on the ready for non stamped Passport in JB.

Its interesting to read about the two Singaporean women, who ended up having to pay a fine and get the rubber glove treatment when their passport was not stamp.

A few years ago when I went over to to JB, the driver was really emphasising that I must check my passport for the correct stamp. It was/is a regular ploy of the JB customs to "forget" and on your exit they can give you a hard time, then fine you.

Maybe there is a certain amount of truth in the urban myth?

Curious to know if its happened to anyone else?

Anecdotal evidence from the '80's suggest that it happened with great regularity back then. I haven't done much traveling around Malaysia since the 90's so I don't know if it continues or not, but it would seem so. Leopards don't normally change their spots.

I played golf in Malaysia last Sunday and we drove via the 2nd link. Arrived at 6am and the queues weren't too bad at Malaysia immigration side, had to get out of car to do the finger print thingy. The funniest thing was all three of us on getting our passports back in unision aitomatically opened them to check for the stamp. The Officer actually laughed and we just said force of habit!

When you used to go to Malaysia from SG by train, you were not given a Malaysia entry stamp.

I remember having to explain this to Malaysian immigration on departure one time. As it happened by chance I had proof I had entered by train, so the officer just noted that fact in writing under my departure stamp.

p.s Have they built a shopping mall on the old railway station yet?

Sadly I heard that that is what is planned.

There seems to be no concept of heritage in SG, just look at how they cloned the Raffles hotel to 10* it's original size, and bulldozed Clarke Quay only to rebuild it as a Disney pastiche of what it had been as examples.

:o :o :o

I heard about someone working with the authorities that indeed, they're rather obsessed with new things for new-ness sake. Some have expressed regret for tearing down heritage buildings.

What they did with Clarke Quay was bordering on obsessed. Profit before anything else. Just of course this being SG there are <cough> no back-handers going on at all.

You know the old cinema, the 'Capitol Building'

Despite being opposite one of the largest shopping malls in SG, in a district drowning in shopping malls, I'll give you one guess what they intend to demolish and turn that heritage site into.

Oh yeah. I like that building and pass by it every Thursday night. Unfortunately, they've shuttered everything there (offices and shops) and looks like it has an appointment with the wrecking crew. :?

I think the plan is to leave the facade and stick a huge mall behind it this. If done nicely it very works well or it may end up like that cathey cinema next to plaza Singapura, thats so butchered they may as well pulled down the sad remains of the facade.
