Are Children Independent in Singapore?

Post by TheWrights » Sat, 11 Jun 2011 8:57 am

I am about to move to Singapore from the U.S. with my family, and I am wondering how kids are treated in Singapore. Do they have the freedom to run around town and play unsupervised, and if so, at what age? (There is a trend in both the U.S. and the U.K. to keep children under the constant watch of parents until later and later ages). Are girls any less free in that regard then boys?

I guess what you need to do is let us know what your definition of a child is.....

Yes, young teens are allowed to go unsupervised to town, but that of course it the bailiwick of the child's parents and not the law of the land. Of course, looking at what the US has become, I can understand your concern. It was one of the reasons my children were born & raised here in Singapore (I had the choice). Singapore is not the lawless society that the US has become thanks to a bunch of ill-informed dogooders. Here you can still discipline your child without going to jail, therefore kids are, on the whole, more tractable here than there.

Boys & girls have equal rights here.

Try googling Singapore and doing some reading. Wiki would be a good start.

Children here are very independent. Not unusual to see a 10 year old negotiating the MRT by themselves. We've begun letting up the supervision--my daughter has made some great friends in our block and she runs between our apartments after school studying and playing. I never expected to have such an opportunity, but we are thankful such great folks live in our block. I know it wouldn't have happened in the US.
