Intel looks doomed in the next 5 years, as ARM predicts it will take 40% of the world market. Intel have said they will come into the tablet market. PC's are likely to drop significantly, as more androids and smart devices take the world by storm.
Apparently it as only taken android 2 years to hit over the 20 million mark, where it took Mac and Windows 8 years. Source is digitimes.com

Intel
Don't write Intel off just yet. They have a good habit of getting things very right - second, or even third time around.
They are making some good progress in the cloud space.
Here are a few of my thoughts from another thread:
"Intel: A dark horse and undervalued. Very out of favour at the moment in the markets. They have a good history of getting things right and building at lower cost than everyone else. If they make the right inroads and become the backbone of the cloud industry they could hit it big time. A clever acquisition of McAfee from a security standpoint was a shrewd move to address the concern over cloud security and leverage on McAfee's expertise in this space. I'm not sure I'd be bullish on them as they need to make serious inroads into the tablet space. But if anyone can get it right it should be Intel. Worth a punt if you can hold for a few years".
And also:
"Intel are placing a great deal of resources in the cloud space and really pinning their future on being the leader and the backbone of it. It's interesting that they've also abandoned their preference to MS and see the smartphone and tablet arena in Android and Apple as where they also want to be. Intel in Laptops, smartphones, tablets - a sort of continuity and consistency appeal don't you think. They are making good traction with many tablet makers and are pushing, as you rightly say, to get into the apple devices. They have major competition though in smartphones from a British firm called ARM who have industry leadership in this space despite no one knowing about them. Also AMD are making some great advances too which will shake up the chip makers if they gain a foothold and win some big partnership contracts.
But my reason for being partly bullish on Intel is the cloud space. Nothing is ever bulletproof as you know, but they are a good bet and have a great track record of coming back to the table (not always the best first time) with the best product in class".

They are at the whim of companies like TSMC/UMC for manufacture of their product, and unless you have your own in house manufacture you tend to be 6-12 months behind the AMD/Intels of this world for the technology node you can operate at.
Intel/AMD design/build/manufacture their own product so surely that puts them in a stronger position.

Yes. Their business is licensing the architecture.Barnsley wrote:ARM are fabless design house though aren't they?.ksl wrote:Intel looks doomed in the next 5 years, as ARM predicts it will take 40% of the world market. Thing is, Intel mostly produces CISCs processors and ARM--as can be found in the name--is RISC. It's the whole CISC-RISC debate again and the speed, size and power consumption of RISCs seem to be favorable to where electronics are now going.
Intel, of course, realizes this and committed themselves to compete and will modify their products accordingly so.
