Sadly, agree, but normally only found in the spoken language. Rarely in the written word, and then, usually only by the uneducated.

LOL reminds me of that clip from the Simpsons where the Indian lab tech is sitting in a burnt out lab and is stunned to find word "Inflammable" actually means the content is "flammable"
