Renting private car

I'm about to rent a private car from its owner. I'm EP holder, less than 1 year in Singapore and hence will use my foreign DL.

I would like to ask the following:
- Do I need to have an official agreement with the owner?
- Is there anything specific to Singapore that I need to know with regards to private car rent?

Appriciate your advise.

Best advice? Don't do it.

Insurance coverage.

If you must, you better have a written agreement, but without proper insurance coverage, you could get your butt in a jam if your have an accident. Especially if you don't have any agreement. Nothing to stop the owner claiming the car was stolen.

Thank you for the advice, SMS

I will drop the idea in case there is any uncovered liability.

What I found so far was:

http://www.lta.gov.sg/motoring_matters/ ... rivate.htm

It does explain insurance requirements but unfortunately not the agreement part.

you may want to check out car companies that deal with expatriates, they do have short term rent/lease.

That is true but you can drive on a foreign DL for the first year.

There can be quite a waiting list (months) so converting at earliest opportunity is wise

I think that he is talking about taking the test. It takes a couple of months from the time you register till your test date.

Indeed, I was talking about the test. For me it was 1.5 months from booking to sitting but I know people who have had a 3 month wait.

The actual conversion takes no time at all once you have a successful test result. The queue on the other hand....best to go very early.

Really  ? Are we talking about BTT? How is it possible if this is a requirement just to continue Class 3 course?
IIRC only few years ago it was no more than 2 weeks.

I waited two months for the BTT. I guess Singaporean efficiency isn’t what it’s cracked up to be.
Just a little advice. Take a number for the conversion desk before you go in to take the test. It will save you some time.
