Port Douglas - is it worth a visit?

Post by Petales Soufflez! » Thu, 28 Apr 2011 12:16 am

Hi can anyone tell me if Port Douglas in the north of Australia's worth a visit, please? Can one bathe in the sea, lie on the sand, go snorkeling, scuba diving, play golf, dine decently, do a spot of white water rafting?

How long should one stay there and will it be better to stay on the beach or in the town itself or even at Cairns?

What will the weather be like in August, please?

Thanks.

Go to Cairns first and go from there. Brisbane got hit quite badly on the storms and flooding. Cairns missed the last cyclone. It is autumn now

Will it be cold in winter in August?

Can one still use the pool and swim in the sea?

My husband and I lived in Brisbane for a bit and went to Port Douglas twice and LOVED it. We went once at Christmas (a bit too hot) and once in July when it was beautiful but a bit cool a couple days. I think right now would be a great time to go. There are many boat trips you can take out to the Great Barrier Reef for snorkeling and scuba diving. That was amazing. I think we did Poseidon tours the second time and it was better than whatever company we used the first time, can't remember the name. My husband went fishing up the river the too but you can do deep sea fishing as well, it was just too rough that day. Definitely worth it, you should go. Fly to Cairns, rent a car and drive up the gorgeous coastline to Port Douglas, I think it took a little over an hour to drive.

I holidayed around Queensland last August (did a roadtrip from Bundaberg to Airlie Beach), and the weather stayed in the late 20's to early 30's. With Cairns being higher on the map, you'll probably have temps in the mid 30's. I find that the only time to discover the hotter climes is during the winter, so the temperature isn't as big a shock as it would be in summer.
