advice on storage tips as we're going away for 5 months

Post by morethanmum22 » Wed, 20 Apr 2011 9:42 pm

hiya

just wondering if anyone can guide me re storage tips etc in singapore. we're going away for 5 months, and currently have a 4 bedroom appt which we want to pack up and put into storage (as lease is nearly up anyway). but ive been reading some horror stories about the stuff getting runied in storage espy in tropical climate like singapore- not sure to what extent its true and what kind of items are likely to get damaged...

we have mostly teak furniture rather expensive antique-victorian style furniture, dining table n chairs, coffee table n arm chair sets, large study room leather top table etc and also large wall mirrors and paintings... also coming from a cold weather country originally, we have a lot of heavy winter clothing with leather wear etc..

so my question is- how can i avoid things getting spoilt- if at all, is there anything speciak that the Mover/packers can do re packing so that nothing gets damaged with humidity etc...
any tips, ideas and advice wud be really great...!! many thnx :):)

Probably not what you are after, but just the other day I came across a huge Self Storage facility at ....Bus Stop 53151 ...sorry, don't know the address. It's just that I noticed it because one of our friends was looking for one.

You could pop in there and have a chat to them about the best way to safely store your goods.

There are several storage facilities on my links page below as well. You would need to check to see if any offer climate controlled facilities. I'm sure some will but obviously at a cost.

Have known many expats who go abroad and when they get back, find almost the whole place infested with mold, there are a few things that you can do,
01, Buy a couple of good dehumidifiers and place each into every room. will probably be cheaper than to transport all your stuff into a storage place and the storage charges, and you still have to deal with the infestation to your place. Cover all furniture with bed sheet size cloths.
02, www.extraspace.com.sg www.lockandstore.com.sg www.bigorange.com.sg www.store-it.com.sg
03, Get a helper to go to your place, air it, clean the dust... once every fortnightly.

Yeah, dumping loads of dehumidifiers all over will help contain the moisture. But for 5 mths I'm not sure how many you'll need... probably tons. Will anyone be popping in to see how things are, or will the doors to your place remain sealed for 5 mths? :)

It would help if you could program the aircon to switch on at a set time each day or twice daily, even just for several mins.
