Price of Laptops and where to buy?
Price of Laptops and where to buy?
Hi, I'm moving to Singapore from the UK. I've heard that the price of laptops in Singapore is alot less than the UK. When I recently visited the laptops looked really expensive compared to the UK. Am I missing something? Any advice would be appreciated as I'm debating whether to buy a laptop here before I leave for Singapore.
With the Singapore $ being strong the £ has dropped 30%, so it's going to be an expesnive purchase here unless you are paid in Sing$, which makes it cheaper to purchase in UK.
Some UK importers are big and can give better discounts than Singapore, due to population size and import quantity. So maybe UK is still significantly cheaper

It doesn't feel that long ago (end '07) that you'd get over $3 to the £1, now as KSL says the £ has been completely rogered and is as near as matters at $2.ksl wrote:With the Singapore $ being strong the £ has dropped 30%, so it's going to be an expesnive purchase here unless you are paid in Sing$, which makes it cheaper to purchase in UK.

HK and SG used to be places to come and scoop up electrical bargains, but I don't see that anymore. In fact I am unable to recall anyone posting here (in my time, c. 1 year) saying that they have managed to get such a good bargain. Also all the (very short-lived!) spam on electrical goods here, seems to be from the US.
I'd buy in the UK, not only on Px, but your post-sale consumer rights are so much better too.
If you're going to be paid in S$ then I'd wait and get one here, preferably at one of the IT shows where you can get discounts. If anything goes wrong with it it's easier to get fixed if you bought it here and warranty is valid here (I know some places in the UK offer international guarantees but with the service standards in Singapore I'm not sure I'd trust some of the places here to honour them)
Also, if you buy a lot of DVDs and want to watch them on your laptop, if your machine is British you won't be able to play Singapore/Asia region discs on it (unless there is now a way to make a laptop region free, there didn't seem to a few months back when I was looking)
